Ali Gohar Khan holds position of
a legend in PIA Engineering. He was first person from Jadoon
family to become Aeronautical Engineer. Ali Gohar Khan worked as
supervisor in Hindustan Aircraft (now known as Hindustan
Aeronautics Limited - HAL) in Bangalore before partition of the
Indian sub-continent in 1947. He moved to newly independent
Pakistan in 1948 and joined Orient Airways owned by
industrialist Mirza Ahmad Ispahani. Ali Gohar Khan was employee
number 415 (P# 415) in Orient Airways. In 1955, he was given the
role of section leader in aircraft overhaul after merger of
Orient Airways with PIA. Different kinds of aircraft operated by
PIA from Douglas DC-3 to Boeing jetliners were overhauled under
Ali Gohar Khan's supervision from 1950s till his retirement as
Chief Engineer Aircraft Overhaul in late 1970s. He was first PIA
engineer to visit Fokker factory in late 1950s to evaluate
Fokker F27 turboprop aircraft as was member of team that
selected F27 for PIA. Ali Gohar Khan had his own office in
Fokker Factory till late 1960s and he also represented PIA at
Fokker operators' conference held in Holland in 1962. In his
autobiographical book titled 'I Remember', former
Chairman PIA Enver Jamall has praised Ali Gohar Khan by calling
him a born engineer |
