Four PIA Boeing 747s barred from service to EU countries

ISLAMABAD (October 30 2006):
Four Boeing 747 planes of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will be grounded on October 30 on the demand of civil aviation authorities of Britain and European Union, official sources said on Sunday. The last flight of PIA Boeing 747 plane would take off for Britain on Sunday, they added.

The visit to Britain by Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and other parliamentarians coincides with this last flight of Boeing 747. Sources told NNI that the civil aviation authorities of Britain and European Union had asked PIA last year that as these planes had completed their terms, they could not be used any more.

PIA was told that flights of Boeing 747 would not be allowed to land on the airports in Britain and Europe. So, PIA officials decided that these planes would not be used for Europe and, instead, Boeing 777 would be used.

WHat registration do these Aircraft carry

I presume both the BAK & BAT.

Will they be allowed to fly in the future or they have been barred in EU for good?

The 747 fleet now appears to be doomed. Unforseen circumstances have made it a habit of making decisons for the PIA management. Without UK, the aircraft looses its keep. Expect a big decision in the coming weeks.

Here is an idea.

Move the 747s to North America until the three 777s arrive by February 2007, and place the 777s to UK.

The flights plan to North America should be altered.

The aircraft should start making a technical stopover in Istanbul, and then fly non-stop from there to the US and Canada.

Karachi-Lahore-Istanbul-New York. The Istanbul-New York journey should be around 10 hours, and should easily covered by the exsisting fleet of 747-300s.

Operate the North American flights via Istanbul until the situation gets better and either these planes are maintained to get EU approval or replaced by the three 777s due in the next couple of months.

didn't PIA previously fly IST-JFK (nonstop) in the 80's or early 90's?

PIA used Istanbul as a stop to New York flights in the 1980s.

The route was:

Islamabad-Istanbul-Frankfurt-New York DC-10
Karachi-Istanbul-Frankfurt-New York DC-10

While the Paris flights were operated by 747s.

Karachi-Cairo-Paris-New York 2 weekly 747s.

Flew on these flights number of times comming home from college in the 1980s.

Turkey is trying desperately to get into EU. I dont think they will do anything that will go against any EU legislation.

The news item suggests the 4 747's will be permanently grounded. That leaves PIA with 4 747's and those wont be allowed to operate in Britain and Europe. So the remaining 4 747's can used elsewhere. Am I reading this correctly.

What about the A310's? Some of them are also under watch arent they.

Quote from the article
According to sources, PIA owns only three Boeing-777 planes, which were bought for flights to USA and Canada, and two more 777 planes would be delivered to the national airline by January 2007
That is incorrect. PIA has 5 777's. With a couple of 77W's coming soon

I think the author of this article is inept. He dosent have all the information.

Are PIA getting 2 or 3 77W's? I thought they ordered 3?

As up to my awareness MAS does not have any 773 so it will be a 772 for sure. I wonder which colors would it support...
