Airport Security Restrictions - latest update
22 August 2006
Following the Government’s reduction in security levels from critical to severe, passengers are reminded that strict security remains in place at all UK airports. This easing of restrictions is not a return to normal.
The revised regulations will continue to have an impact on our airports' operations. All passengers will be subject to hand baggage restrictions and are asked to be patient while these additional security measures are in place as delays are likely. Passengers are asked to allow extra time for their journey and to arrive at the airport prepared.
Hand baggage restrictions
Passengers are now permitted to carry ONE item of hand baggage, no larger than the specified size, through the airport security search point.

Please note: Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. All items carried by passengers will be x-ray screened. For further guidance on prohibited items, including what to do if travelling with baby milk and prescribed medicines, download this leaflet giving details on what you can and can't take into the cabin of an aircraft.
All laptops and large electrical items (eg large hairdryer) must be removed from the bag and placed in a tray so that such items neither obscure nor are obscured by the bag.
Pushchairs and walking aids are permitted but must be x-ray screened. Wheelchairs are permitted but must be thoroughly searched.
Further passenger information
Before security:
All shops and catering outlets are open to all passengers, but any liquids and gels purchased must be packed into your luggage for check-in. Any other purchases must fit into your hand luggage.
Once through security:
All shops and catering outlets are open to all passengers. If you are travelling to any destination except the USA then you can take all items purchased in the departures lounge into the aircraft cabin.
If you are travelling to the USA:
Extra restrictions are in place. Passengers will be subjected to secondary security searches at the gate. No toiletries or cosmetics purchased in the departure lounge will be allowed into the aircraft cabin and any drinks or liquid items must be consumed before boarding. Food, however, is allowed. Passengers boarding flights to the USA and items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, will be subjected to secondary search at the gate and any liquids discovered will be removed.
If you are in any doubt about what you can and cannot take on board please ask a member of staff.

security issues at MAN
When the security level in the UK went to 'critical' due to possible terrorist attacks on transatlantic (TA) flights all the pax onboard TA flights via MAN with the exception of course for those terminating at MAN had to remain onboard. These instructions were passed only by security at MAN because their job had simply doubled overnight and they simply could not divert any extra staff to screen PIA pax during the rush in the mornings.
When TSA discovered this they were not happy with this arrangement and would only allow flights east bound to stay on but not west bound flights.
This meant every single pax including wheelchairs had to disembark if any pax were carrying anything larger than a laptop size bag it would have to be tagged up for the hold and anything liquid would have to be disposed of.
Initially all electric items were not allowed through even mobile phones but now these rules have been relaxed.
All stations operating via MAN have been issued instructions in this regard not to allow any handbaggage onboard with the exception of a clear plastic bag with travel docs, pocket sized wallet or purse, prescription medication, keys and a mobile phone only.
East bound flights are still to remain onboard but all west bound flights are still subject to screening and clearance from TSA before departure of the flight.

Does this mean that the 1 piece of hand luggage that we were previously allowed upto a maximum of 7kg into the cabin is no longer allowed? They haven't mentioned weight either.
Previously it always was one piece of hand luggage which included a hold all with a maximum weight of 7kg and I would also carry a shoulder bag which would contain my ticket, passport, cigarettes, gum, pen, money etc.
If this now strictly applies to 1 piece, then the airlines should increase the baggage allowance by 7 to 10kg to make up for what is not permissable to carry into the cabin.
These buggers have sure succeeded in making travel for all more inconvenient than ever before.

handbaggage allowance
All pax travelling ex MAN are allowed 01 pc only which is not to exceed a laptop size bag 45cm/35cm/16cm - this applies to all airlines from the UK.
The weight restriction of 5-7kgs max still applies - whether you can get enough weight into that size of bag is another matter.
But if you want to check-in your handluggage PIA ex MAN will allow upto 05kgs extra without charging on top of your weight allowance. However that means you do not carry any handbaggage once you've left check-in and boarding agents will check your boarding cards at the gate which will be marked 'no handluggage'. If any is found you may be charged at the gate with excess baggage costing £10/kg.
Transatlantic pax via MAN are advised to co-operate with the same restrictions to avoid further security problems and delays at MAN.
