What is that number?

Post by TAILWIND »

ANY forum member especially 777 pilots, please see picture in the link and tell me what EG-CJ stands for, written below AP-BGK on the call sign plate, immediately below the captain side MFDs ( just above where captain's right knee would be)

SELCAL stands for SELective CALling (somebody correct me if i am wrong), it is used in HF comm. Instead of continously monitoring the HF, which is by the way a great niusance due to noice, selcal capability gives an indication to the pilots when the transmission is addressed to that aircraft (using the selcal code). The pilots then dont have to monitor the noisy HF and are alerted once the call is meant for them. A very useful feature on oceanic flights where the only comminication is via HF. ACARS and digital pilot-controller link is also being developed where instead of voice, the messages will be in text. like msn massenger :D
Have fun

Is it only ground to air or can an aircraft also calla specific ground station using selcal. In other words do ground stations have SELCAL codes? ANd what type of indictaion the pilot gets, aural or visual, i mean some light etc when they have a call.
