Raise in PIA fares baffles trade, passengers
IQBAL MIRZA
KARACHI (May 14 2006): In an unexpected move that has baffled both the travel trade and the travelling public, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced increase in its tariff, effective from May 16.
The new tariff would remain in force till May 31, and would be subject to review thereafter. The move was so sudden that even some of the high officials and travel agents had no clue about it.
Everything seems to be happening in a hush-hush manner in PIA these days. The plan that was drawn up for the opening of new routes, and announced with a fanfare to dazzle the people, has run into difficulties. The Nairobi, Urumchi, Frankfurt and Istanbul sectors were closed down a couple of months back without announcing the closure for public consumption.
The fares have been increased on the plea of the ever-increasing fuel prices. Since the fares are now deregulated and International Air Transport Association (IATA) has no control on fixation of fares, as was the case earlier. The increase in fares appears to be the easiest way of protecting the airline from a dip in its revenues.
The fuel price hike has hit other airlines also, but PIA has taken the lead and has scored another first in this area! No consideration has been shown to the inconvenience it would cause to travelling public.
The move was so swift that even several of the PIA clients, ie travel agents, had not received any official intimation about this move till Saturday. These are the people who sell PIA and should have been the first to be informed about this increase, a spokesman of the Travel Agents Association of Pakistan (TAAP) told Business Recorder here on Saturday.
The fares have been increased on the Birmingham, Manchester, London, Chicago, Houston, New York and Toronto sectors in the following manner. These would be applicable on roundtrip tickets having four months' validity. The new fares would be:
Karachi-Birmingham-Manchester 'economy plus' Rs 55,039; economy Rs 47,860. Karachi-London 'economy plus' Rs 40,710; economy Rs 35,400.
From Lahore and Islamabad fares would be the same from both these places for Birmingham, London and Manchester economy plus Rs 55039; economy Rs 47,860.
Karachi Chicago, Houston, New York 'economy plus' Rs 79,166; economy Rs 68,840. Karachi-Toronto 'economy plus' Rs 82,800; economy Rs 72,000.
From Lahore and Islamabad, fares would be the same from both these places for Chicago, Houston, New York and Toronto 'economy plus' Rs 89,240; economy Rs 77,600.
Aviation experts are of the opening that instead of taxing the travelling public, the management should have drawn up some contingency so as to bail out the national carrier from losses.
