Fire in PIA building damages 15 offices

KARACHI: A fire broke out in the flight operation building of the Pakistan International Airlines located at old terminal No 1 on Wednesday, said Deputy Chief Fire Officer Muhammad Naeem Yousuf.

Yousuf said the fire started on the second floor of the ground and spread to two other buildings. He said only 15 of the 100 offices were damaged because the Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire.

No one was injured in the blaze, he added. The cause of the fire was not known.

The fire broke out in flight operation buliding but after office hours, I dont know why but every year due to short circuit fire breaks out in flt. ops and that also after office hour........... when electric load is very less.

KARACHI: About 30 out of 100 offices of the PIA's Flight Operations Department, situated near the national airline's main office and Terminal No 1, were gutted when a fire erupted in its Administration Block in the Airport police jurisdiction on Wednesday evening.

Tariq Moeen, the Fire Chief of PIA, who was personally present at the scene, told The News that a fire engulfed the said offices at about 6:15 pm and the fire fighters of PIA and CAA were called out to put off the blaze.

"However, when the fire got out of control we had to seek help from Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and City District Government Karachi (CDGK) fire fighters, which responded at once and controlled the fire in a professional manners," he added.

He said the fire engulfed the offices of Flight Operations situated at the second floor, "where we needed the snorkel, but we used the cherry-picker of PIA that helped till a height of 40 feet and through a well coordinated and joint operation we controlled the fire".

Captain Dara, the Chief Pilot Corporate Safety of PIA said that about 30 percent offices of the Administration Block suffered damages, while rest of the offices were saved by the joint efforts of the fire fighters.

The cause of fire and the extent of damages are yet to be determined, he added.

Kazim Ali, the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) CDGK, said that following receipt of information at about 6:58, five fire tenders were rushed to the site and by 9pm the blaze was controlled, while the cooling process was in progress till the filling of this report.

Naeem Yousuf, the Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO), who commanded the operation, said that the losses were curtailed by immediate response from the fire extinguishing personnel as about 80 percent offices were saved from destruction.
