PIA to Bring a Number of Grounded ATR 42, Airbus A320 and Boeing 777 Aircraft Back Into Service

Post by Abbas Ali »

PIA is taking steps to bring a grounded Boeing 777 and an Airbus A320 back into service.

Delivery of engine(s) required by the grounded Boeing 777 expected within two days.

The Boeing 777 with 440 seats is expected to perform PIA flight from Islamabad to Paris on January 10, 2025. It will also take part in Hajj 2025 flight operations.

Probably the Boeing 777 is Boeing 777-300ER aircraft registration AP-BMS?

AP-BMS became inactive in the first week of September 2024.

According to a document shown on news media recently, AP-BMS need to undergo:

Checks A1+A2
Deep cleaning
Engine number 2 that was removed for installation on engine number 2 position on sister ship registration AP-BHV

Back in March 2024 PIA invited bids for 3 General Electric GE90 family engines on lease for at least 6 months with lease term extendable to 1 year.

1 x GE90-94B engine
2 x GE90-115B engine

Most probably these are the engine that will be cleared at Karachi Port and shifted to PIA Hanger.
Most probably for AP-BGJ and AP-BMS / AP-BGY

Can't say which A320s will be back to service

BMG, BGY, BMS and BGJ, four 777s grounded in the last 4-14 months. Up untill last year, PIA had 9 777s active and bought in BID to the Ispahani hangar to reactivate it. From that position to this position where they are now working to bring back the aircraft which were already operational, sad state of affairs. Would be a major achievement if they are able to achieve the same number of 9 active 777s by the time UK OPS restart.

Both are gone due to managements negligence and now The amount of funds it will take to recover these two aircraft PIA can easily afford to lease a better condition 777, so no point thinking about these two again.
Only AP-BID can be recovered.

So I guess these 777s are the first in PIAs fleet to be retired

PIA to add eight more aircraft by next year, says CEO

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will add eight aircraft to its fleet next year, its CEO has told a National Assembly committee.

The meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Aviation, chaired by MNA Nawabzada Iftikhar Ahmed Khan Babar, was held on Monday at the Islamabad International Airport, said a press release.

In his briefing, PIA CEO Khurram Mushtaq said the new wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft would be used on long routes.

Responding, the airline CEO said eight new 777 aircraft would be added to the national airline’s fleet next year.

I think it means PIA intends to bring a number of grounded Boeing 777s back into service and have eight Boeing 777s operational in year 2025.

Presently, PIA fleet includes five Boeing 777s operational and seven Boeing 777s grounded for various reasons.

Probably, Boeing 777 aircraft registrations AP-BGJ, AP-BGY and AP-BMS to resume flying in 2025 to bring a total number of eight operational Boeing 777s in PIA fleet.

PIA is in the process of rejuvenating its aircraft that were in long storage, bringing them back into the operational fleet. As per the plan laid down by airline's management, the operational fleet of Boeing 777s will reach to number 8. Similarly, the management has planned to increase the number of Airbus A320 aircraft to 12 and ATR 42-500 to 2.

This fleet requirement is as per the aggressive operating plan that PIA has set for itself for the year 2025.

The goal should be:
10x 777
15x 320
3x Atr

Can anyone share any clarification regarding the ATR 72s long stored at karachi PIA still paying their lease?

Probably means that PIA won't operate 22 flights to UK then. With 8 777s it's difficult to operate flights to all these destinations unless they pull out the 777s from Saudi Arabian operations completely. They need 4 aircrafts just for UK, 1 for Canada and 2 for EU/ Far East.

On January 6, PIA Boeing 777-300ER aircraft registration AP-BMS returned to service when it left Karachi at 11:02 PM as flight PK370 to Islamabad.

AP-BMS had become inactive in the first week of September 2024.
