The aircraft returned to Karachi after experiencing problem with engine number 2 (right side engine), according to news reports. Serene Air Boeing 737-800 aircraft registration AP-BNA is powered by two CFM International CFM56 engines. Due to unavailability of this aircraft in Lahore, Serene Air Lahore to Karachi flight ER523 was cancelled on October 25. A number of angry passengers of the cancelled flight argued with officials at Lahore Airport.

The aircraft remained on the ground at Karachi Airport for 27 hours 20 minutes. On October 26, Serene Air Boeing 737-800 (aircraft registration AP-BNA) apparently performed a test flight from & to Karachi Airport. The aircraft departed from Karachi at 7:20 PM and landed in Karachi at 7:59 PM. The aircraft attained maximum altitude of 37,025 feet during this 39 minute duration flight.

Later, on October 26, Serene Air Boeing 737-800 (aircraft registration AP-BNA) left Karachi at 10:18 PM as flight ER500 to Islamabad. The flight was scheduled to leave Karachi at 6:45 AM on October 26.
