ASF During Search Cuts Female Passenger's Hair at Karachi Airport - Inquiry Ordered

Post by Abbas Ali »

Aviation Ministry has ordered an inquiry into an incident in which Airports Security Force (ASF) cut a female passenger's hair over some suspicion at Karachi Airport on June 1.

According to an official statement:

"An incident was reported on June 1, 2024, where ASF officials, during a search in International Departures at Jinnah International Airport - Karachi stopped a couple consisting of a woman and her husband who were travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj by Saudia flight SV701 to Jeddah.

Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) had cleared the passenger but ASF staff raised suspicions and cut her hair.

After scanning, she was cleared to board the flight. Therefore, it is considered necessary to inquire into this matter to ascertain the facts of the incident and fix responsibility.

Aviation Secretary had constituted a 4-member Board of Inquiry and asked it to finalize its report within 2 working days."

The Board of Inquiry has been asked to ascertain whether the action taken by ASF officials was in line with established protocols or if they transgressed their authority and to fix responsibility if any.

Apparently, Saudia did not operate flight SV701 from Karachi to Jeddah on June 1.

Maybe it's May 30 Saudia flight SV701 from Karachi to Jeddah performed by airline's Airbus A330-300 aircraft registration HZ-AQ21. The aircraft left Karachi at 9:24 AM on May 30.

Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) statement:

HRCP is shocked to learn that Karachi's airport security officials violated a female passenger's right to dignity and privacy by forcibly cutting her hair during an irregular security check. Such actions are beyond comprehension, and cannot be justified in the name of some dubious 'suspicions'. This transgression is further reflective of a patriarchal mindset that violates women's rights with impunity. HRCP demands that the perpetrators be held strictly accountable, and that the state take action to uphold women's rights to dignity and privacy at every forum.
