Skardu Airport New Runway Becomes Operational

Skardu International Airport new 6-kilometer long runway for flights under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) for wide-body aircraft to become operational this year.

Presently, flights to/from Skardu Airport Runway 14/32 are operated under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) by narrow-body aircraft. From December 2, 2021, Skardu Airport became available for international flights under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) only.

From December 13, 2021, Skardu Airport Runway 15/33 permanently became unavailable for flight operations.

Most likely the new runway to become Runway 14R/32LR and the current runway Runway 14/32 to become Runway 14L/32R.

That 6km figure, mentioned earlier and even in the video, doesn't seem realistic imo. From satellite images, the length looks to be at the most around 4km, and that includes the stopway at end of both sides...

Great to see this investment, looking forward to more flights and hopefully of the likes from our pakistani ones to Qatar, Fly Dubai, Gulf Air or maybe even Saudia

Work in progress on under construction parallel runway south of Runway 14/32. All pilots advised to exercise caution while landing.

Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued:

From August 12 to November 11 newly constructed Runway 14R/32L of Skardu Airport is available under Visual Flight Rules (VFR).

Aerodrome Reference Code is 4C.

Aerodrome Reference Code 4C means Skardu International Airport is available for narrow-body passenger and cargo aircraft including:

Airbus A320 family
Boeing 737 family
Douglas DC-9 family
McDonnell Douglas MD-80 family

Probably newly constructed Runway 14R/32L capable of handling wide-body aircraft flights but allied facilities at the airport not yet ready for wide-body aircraft ground handling.

On August 13, aircraft began using newly constructed Runway 14R/32L of Skardu Airport for landing & takeoff.

airblue Airbus A320 aircraft registration AP-BNV flight PA251 from Islamabad landing on new Runway 14R/32L of Skardu Airport.

Later, airblue Airbus A320 aircraft registration AP-BNV used new Runway 14R/32L of Skardu Airport for takeoff as flight PA252 to Islamabad.

I don't know what was the requirement for such an expenditure. Few flights a day do not require an additional rwy. They could have improved the terminal and passenger facilities instead.

This new runway & allied facilities are built for PAF in order to tackle increasing activity of IAF across LOC 🤔.

CAA or PIA have nothing to do with that.

Skardu International Airport is authorized for international operations up to Aerodrome Reference Code 4C or below under Visual Flight Rules (VFR)/Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) till November 10, 2024.
