Protest against delayed promotion
LAHORE: Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) of the Civil Aviation Authority have decided to "go slow" from September 11 to press the authorities to grant them their long overdue promotions and other benefits associated with their jobs.
Around 70 air traffic controllers working in various parts of the country met at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, on Thursday to chalk out strategy against the CAA hierarchy, which they termed was biased towards them. In a joint statement, the ATCs said they would take extreme measures for their rightful demands."We can go to any extent if our demands are not fulfilled," they said, adding that going on strike was also one of the steps in this regard. They said as many as 285 ATCs were working in various parts of the country and they had been denied promotions and other privileges associated with their jobs for the last 20 years.
They regretted that CAA Director General Air Marshal Pervaiz Akhtar Nawaz had promised in May to renew the career progression of ATCs. But, they said, during the latest meeting of the departmental promotion committee held from August 24 to 26, the CAA DG did not consider their cases. "The ATCs are one of the least important organs of the CAA. They will have to work in same circumstances and if they are uncomfortable, they can relinquish their jobs," sources quoted the CAA Director General as having informed the meeting. They said they had been performing their duties diligently but now they were left with no option but to take extreme measures. They said that an airline had written a letter to the CAA headquarters that it had suffered monetary loss due to ATCs "go slow" policy in May and June. The ATCs, had earlier adopted "go slow" policy from May 1 to July 1 but they returned to their normal duty after CAA DG assured them that their grievances would be removed and their promotion cases would be reviewed but to no avail.
