PIA ATR 72-500 registration AP-BKY performing flight PK-517 from Karachi runway excursion incident during landing at Panjgur Airport. All passengers & crew aboard the aircraft remained safe.
The aircraft was carrying a total of 43 passengers and burst one of its tyres in the incident.
There seems to be extensive damage to the airplane (landing gears in particular). It will be a mammoth effort to first bring the plane back to concrete ground and then do the repairs. Any preliminary guesses on the cause? If I am not mistaken this is a regular ATR flight to this destination.
Flight PK-517 was carrying 54 passengers, according to Geo News.
PIA relief flight is ready to bring stranded passengers of flight PK-518 from Panjgur to Karachi. CAA clearance awaited for the operation of relief flight.
PIA flight PK-518 from Panjgur was scheduled to land at Karachi at 10:30 AM. The flight's status was changed to 'Cancelled' at 1:00 PM.
Karachi, 10 November 2018: PIA flight PK-517 for the sector Karachi-Punjgur operated by ATR 72 aircraft; it landed safely at Panjgur at 8:20 AM but due skid went off the runway for few meters and two tyres got deflated due rough surface. All 54 passengers safely disembarked the aircraft and there were no injuries, spokesman said on Saturday.
PIA management immediately prepared one additional ATR carrying necessary tools and equipment for Panjgur. However it got delayed due non-clearance by CAA. Currently flight has operated and all passengers have been brought back. PIA regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers.
Spokesperson said that President & CEO PIA Air Marshal Arshad Malik has ordered an immediate inquiry of this incident. Flight Safety Department has started investigation and report will be submitted soon. PIA Spokesman rejects the speculations circulating in the media regarding the incident, PIA spokesman concluded.
* PIA ATR 72-500 (AP-BKY) departed from Karachi as flight PK-517 to Panjgur with inoperative brakes number two. Aircraft's captain was informed about it by airline's engineering in technical log book of the aircraft.
* The aircraft's brakes number one failed/stopped working during landing at Panjgur.
* The aircraft blew tyres on rough surface after leaving runway.
Preliminary information suggests the aircraft was dispatched with the right hand brakes inoperative, the left hand brakes failed during landing causing the aircraft to overrun the end of the runway, while running over soft ground both left hand tyres blew.

Though MEL allows dispatch with one brake in-op with certain conditions (which obviously MUST have been met), yet in my organisation, dispatch with brake in op is a big NO.
* PIA ATR 72-500 registration AP-BKY has been moved to the runway at Panjgur Airport. The aircraft will depart for Karachi after necessary inspections/repairs.
* Longer runway could have prevented the incident.
* In the past, two incidents of aircraft overrunning runway have happened at Panjgur Airport.
