"In considering how a pilot's job description has changed from the hands-on era to the current era of programming and monitoring computers, old timers suggest that today's pilots better be careful or they might program themselves out of a job. I don't think that there are many old aviators from the hands-on era who envy the pilots of these aerial transport yawners. There are a multitude of pilots flying the jets today who haven't had the privilege of getting scared. The greatness of an airline doesn't come from its large size, or all the updated equipment. It's the employees who make the best of what they have and dedicate their hearts and soul to making it work. That's what makes a resplendent airline."--The Golden Years of Flying by Capt Tex Searle
In my career with PIA as a captain and copilot, I flew with 152 captains. Can you imagine what an opportunity it was to acquire that experience and wealth of knowledge. One of the problems facing the aviation industry is lack of experience for the role assigned. In North America, an airline copilot flies with one captain for some length of time which in my opinion shouldn't be so. I have compiled a list of the seniors who taught me to stay alive:

Re: Acquired experience
No. I got my FAA ATP with Capt Habib when we went together from the Statler Hilton (Manhattan 32nd St) by subway to an airfield on Long Island and did the test together in a Cessna177RG. He had earlier graciously allowed me to share his room in the hotel for the purpose and had insisted on my moving from a YMCA somewhere on 52nd St.
I had operated a freighter flight to New York and decided at Frankfurt to get my ATP and applied for leave from Capt N. Chughtai (CPPS) to travel from there back to New York. My log books were brought by Capt Reginald Luther who was operating some flight out of Karachi.

Capt N. Chughtai (CPPS) also conveyed my change of plans at Frankfurt to my residence in Karachi.

This would have been in the early 80s when he was on DC-10s during General Zia's era. He did his written exam in Tetoboro NJ and the practical as you say up in Long Island. We spoke last night and he sends his Salam and greetings to you.
