In Memory of PIA Airbus A300 (AP-BCP)

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Airbus A300B4-203 (AP-BCP) takeoff from Karachi Airport on July 18, 1989, as flight PK-302 for Lahore.



On September 28, 1992, AP-BCP's flying career came to an end on the 'Fan Marker Hill' 9nm south of Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal. The A300 struck hill during final approach to Kathmandu Airport. All 167 people aboard the aircraft died in this accident.

PIA should be open about its accident investigation as this knowledge is beneficial to the flight crew, and is a reminder to Flight Operations / Management to do something, since an accident doesn't happen out of the blue. An accident is built up through a chain of events--in other words it could even start in somebody's office desk six months earlier. For example a Fokker F-27 crash after takeoff at night on Aug 6, 1970 at Rawat near Rawalpindi when I was flying as a First Officer out of that base should have been made instructive to us to its related cause. Nothing came out of that for the crew except general talk. A B707 crash near Jeddah in Nov 1979 was also similarly dealt with. Nothing, except that the captain was a Hafiz-e Quran. I know there are insurance requirements to be dealt with but internally something should be done by way of imparting information to the flying crew which is reflected in training.
