Re: Destinations Served by PIA in the Past
Interesting that even in 1975, ISB was referred to as "Rawalpindi"

Re: Destinations Served by PIA in the Past
^ I think it was due to code 'RWP' used for the airport at that time. In my collection, I have a 1977 PIA timetable and in that timetable city name 'Rawalpindi' with code 'RWP' is used. 'Islamabad' or 'ISB' is not used in that timetable.
Probably code 'ISB' was adopted in late 70s or early 80s and after that PIA began using city name 'Islamabad' for advertisements and airport code 'ISB' in timetables.
However, there's a January 1971 advertisement in which PIA's first non-stop flight from Dacca to Islamabad is promoted with flight route shown as Dacca->Islamabad->Tehran->Ankara->Amsterdam.
But in other two PIA advertisement examples from mid-70s city name 'Rawalpindi' is used to promote flights to Copenhagen and Abu Dhabi.

Re: Destinations Served by PIA in the Past
Ref: Baghdad advertisement.
I remember this and similar ads with the hub-spoke route map in newspapers / magazines and loved them.
I was wondering if Kano (Nigeria) was served as a code-share with Saudia using a SV aircarft, or was it served by PIA equipment?
I also noticed something that I could not(and do not) understand about PIA route planning. The route from Rawalpindi to Tripoli via Damascus only stops in Dubai on the return leg and terminates in Karachi. I think these kind of routes were not uncommon then and PIA likes to take passengers one way and not fly them back (recent example was the LYP to GLA route that took passengers one way and on return dropped them off at LHE (or vice versa)).

I believe the code-share was with Kenya Airways.Zulfiqar wrote:I was wondering if Kano (Nigeria) was served as a code-share with Saudia using a SV aircarft, or was it served by PIA equipment?

Re: Destinations Served by PIA in the Past
1980s PIA timetables show Jeddah-Kano sector operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines aircraft.
However here I would like to add that PIA Boeing 707 (AP-AWZ) flight PK-740 which crashed on November 26, 1979 after departure from Jeddah Airport had arrived at Jeddah from Kano with a number of passengers. The aircraft was operating flight on Kano-Jeddah-Karachi sector which means PIA's own aircraft also operated flights for Kano for sometime.
