MARCH 2008 - Photo of first Saab 2000 (construction number 045) converted to Saab 2000 ERIEYE AEW&C. This particular photo was taken at a Swedish Air Field on March 27, 2008 during rollout ceremony of the aircraft in Pakistan Air Force markings with serial# 10045. Later, this aircraft underwent extenstive test flights in Sweden under Swedish civilian aircraft registration SE-045.

Here's photo of Saab 2000 (construction number 045) converted to Saab 2000 ERIEYE AEW&C. In following photo taken on July 12, 2008, during 'Farnborough International Airshow 2008' in United Kingdom, the aircraft is seen sporting Swedish civilian aircraft registration SE-045.

PAF Gets First Airborne Early Warning Aircraft

By Iftikhar A. Khan

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8:
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on Tuesday received first of its four Saab-2000 Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft from Sweden.

According to an official announcement, the aircraft landed at one of main operating bases, marking a major milestone in PAF’s overall modernisation plan.

With the induction of the Swedish system, PAF has become one of the few air forces in the world to have Airborne Early Warning capability.

Besides detecting high- and medium-altitude aircraft, this state-of-the-art system is also capable of detecting low-level flying objects over land and sea at extended ranges. The system is capable of picking even the surface targets over the sea.

By virtue of these features, PAF would be able to boost its operational capability manifold by achieving requisite early warning for efficient and meaningful air defence of its airspace.

PAF receives Swedish AWACS aircraft
December 8, 2009

By Ishfaqullah Shawl

ISLAMABAD:: First Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) SAAB-2000, aircraft from Sweden has landed at Pakistan Air Force base to further enhance the operational and surveillance capabilities of Pakistan Air Force (PAF). The first of four Swedish SAAB-2000 AWACS aircraft landed at an operational air base of PAF.

The acquisition of airborne early warning capability by the PAF would greatly enhance its defensive capabilities and is an essential part of its modernisation efforts, PAF sources said. They said the achievement of airborne early warning capability would provide much-needed boost to Pakistan's security.

They said the aircraft is also equipped with electronic surveillance support systems for intelligence gathering along with a full set of defensive aids. The project merges Saab's 2000 turboprop aircraft with Ericsson's Erieye radar system. Marking achievement of a major milestone in the overall modernisation of the PAF, the SAAB-2000 will not only enhance the operational capability of PAF but also make the defence of the country impregnable, said a spokesman of the PAF.

With the induction of Swedish AWACS, the PAF has become one of the few air forces in the world to have AWACS capability. Besides detection of high and medium altitude flying aircraft, this state-of-the-art aircraft is also capable of detecting low-level flying objects over land and sea at extended ranges, the PAF spokesman said.

He said the system is capable of picking even the surface targets over the sea. He said by virtue of these features the PAF would be able to boost its operational capabilities manifold by achieving requisite early warning for efficient and meaningful defence of its air space. The SAAB-2000 is one of the fastest turboprop airplanes in existence. It is able to cruise at a speed of over 665 km/h (360 kt).

In June 2006, Pakistan finalised the purchase of six SAAB 2000 turboprop aircraft to be equipped with the Saab-Ericsson Erieye Airborne Early Warning system. Revised in May 2007 due to renegotiations with the Government of Pakistan, only five aircraft will be delivered, four of which will be equipped with the Erieye system. On April 3, 2008, the first SAAB-2000 Erieye AEW&C was rolled out and presented to Pakistan Air Force officials during a ceremony in Sweden.

General characteristics of SAAB-2000

When and if the training is complete, will the standards SAAB 2000 be converted to AEW configuration? This I am saying that with a number of C-130s, CN-235, Y-12, CitationVI and newly inducted phenoms, does the PAF still need a transport acft?
Abbas would tell us, who was the previous operator of these acft built in 1995?

Pakistan acquires Airborne Early Warning aircraft
December 8, 2009

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has acquired the first of four airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft from Sweden, an air force spokesman said on Wednesday, in a move to match the capabilities of its main rival, India.

The Saab-2000 AWACS aircraft was handed over to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on Tuesday.

"The aircraft landed at one of the PAF's main operating bases, marking the achievement of a major milestone in the overall modernisation plan of PAF," the spokesman said in a statement.

The air force gave no details of the cost of the deal nor did it say when the three remaining aircraft would be delivered.

The AWACS aircraft can detect high- and medium-altitude aircraft, low-level flying objects over land and sea and can pick up surface targets over the sea, the force said.

India acquired the first of three AWACS aircraft from Israel in May.

The nuclear-armed South Asian rivals have fought three wars since their independence from British rule in 1947 and strive to match each other's military capabilities.

India is also wary of its northeastern neighbour, China, which is the main supplier of defence hardware to Pakistan.

Relations between Pakistan and India improved after they launched a peace process in early 2004 but India suspended a broad peace process after last year's militant attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai by Pakistan-based Islamist militants.

India increased its defence spending by nearly a quarter in 2009/10 to $28.9 billion (17.9 billion pounds) as the government focussed on security following the Mumbai attacks in which 166 people were killed.

Pakistan raised its defence spending by 15.3 percent in the 2009/10 fiscal year to $4.2 billion, though defence analysts say much of the increase would be spend on the fight against al Qaeda and Taliban militants on its western border with Afghanistan.
