Which 747s Are Being Grounded???

Post by Amaad Lone »

PIA is adding three long haul aircraft to its fleet in the next couple of months.

Two 777-340ERs, and one 777-240ER.

Any idea which of the eight 747s currently in PIA fleet will be withdrawn?

What about the 747-300s which were going to be scrapped due to section-41 work, is that still happening or are the modifications being carried out.

I am guessing with the fall of oil prices from $75 dollars to $58 a barrel, the operations of the paid off 747-300s just became feasible.

Plus the poor financial health of the airline, (no equity to finance new aircraft) probably makes it necessary for PIA to retain the six 747-300s for atleast another couple of years.

Thats what I was wondering as I spotted AP-BAT with Balochi tail at KHI this morning, I thought these were to be phased out and why have they named 773ER after Thar if AP-BAK is going to stay?

I was wondering when BAT was going to be painted. I guess its turn has come up. It'll look nice with the baloch tail.

AP-BAK and AP-BFW are serviceable. It is probable that the 3 B-777s INDUCTION is delayed by a couple of years as one MAS B-777 has already been wet leased for an indefinite period.

Wow you are funny.

Well one of the 777s is painted and being delivered to PIA on Dec.21, unless Boeing is going to hold up delivery for two years.

Plus the MAS 777 has been leased for a period of 2-3 months, I dont know what is indefinite about that.

Thanks for the info Abbas...good to see PK will get their final order by March 2008 as 777 deliveries are next to impossible to get for the next few years....

After the EU restrictions on the 747 fleet, PIA has been hit bad on its most
lucrative routes. It is being rumored that even though TK is a strong advocate of their retirement, he may be forced to keep the old birds flying till 2011.

Being a qualified chartered engineer I fail to see the wisdom of flying a fleet acquired on lease. SQ has the largest B-777 fleet BUT acquired against cash. I hope PIA finance wallahs know the cost of putting a B-777 seat in air. What will be the fare structure?

Abbas, why is the leased A/C designated 777-240ER. I thought only
Boeing assigns these numbers for whatever airlines it manufactures it for.

While GE Commercial Aviation Service (GECAS) sticks to '6N', International Lease Finance Corp. (ILFC) allows the end-user code on its aircraft on some occasions, especially when the aircraft is delivered from Boeing factory directly to the end-user like PIA in AP-BHX's case. Also, in such cases, the aircraft is delivered by Boeing Company in configuration (seating, cabin interior etc.) selected by the end-user. It means Boeing will deliver AP-BHX having configuration selected by PIA.

For example some of the brand new aircraft acquired from Boeing Company through ILFC by various airlines with their own codes include: PIA Boeing 777-240ER (AP-BHX), Air France Boeing 777-328ER, Emirates Boeing 777-31H/ER, VARIG Boeing 747-441 etc..

For members of forum here’s link to page with complete list of Boeing Customer codes
