KARACHI:
Federal Tourism Minister Nilofar Bakhtiar on Friday met Tariq Kirmani, Chairman Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), and invited the national flag carrier to attend launching ceremony of Visit Pakistan Year 2007.

She requested PIA to offer more discount to facilitate tourist activities in the country and discussed the details of Air Safari for guests of ceremony to be held in Islamabad on December 15.

Kirmani assured the minister of full facilities for Air Safari and said in view of larger number of guests, PIA will try to manage two flights for the purpose. He mentioned that the airline is already offering 25 per cent discount in peak season of December.

However, he assured of his full support to make the event a success and underlined that maximum should be considered by PIA for promoting tourism and attracting tourists.

He also agreed for using the Visit Pakistan 2007 logo on the material being distributed in PIA flights and on the tickets.

It was also mentioned during the meeting that in-flight magazine - Hamsafar - is also dedicated for promotion of tourism year.

Yes this is a good move but the thing that bugs more than anything is that these government ministers think that just by naming one year as "Visit Pakistan 2007" will mean that we'll open the floodgates to millions of tourists.

They need to put in place a proper tourism infrastructure first i.e. the creation of a separate tourist police force for designted tourist areas like they've done in Thailand, the provision of a wide range of hotels (they can encourage this by giving hoteliers tax incentives). Just look at Moenjodaro - we're sitting on an archaelogical gold mine but other than historians the average foreigner has no clue what this is, absolutely nothing has been done to promote this gem. There is no marketing strategy in place i.e advertising in foreign conutries. For example here in London, Egypt's "Red Sea Riviera" is advertised on the sides of double decker buses, black cab taxi's, and on TV.

Yes this costs a lot of money but if the government are serious about promoting tourism then they'll have to put their money where their mouth is. Let's not forget that in the western world when you think Pakistan you remember all the stuff you see in the news e.g. war on terror stuff so people need a lot of convincing

Sorry for the outburst but like I said it just winds me up when ministers lack foresight and planning!

I think Pakistanis are happiest when they are complaining. Instead of celebrating the small victories while working to correct the mistakes, we tend to just bemoan the mistakes.

I believe Pakistanis have learnt this from their parents- Report Card time, and the kid has scored 98%. The mother's first response: "Arey, what about the 2%"?!!

PIA's new found love for tourism. First they must churn out a 'REALISTIC' tourist guide wherein an intending tourist should know beforehand the elements of surprises that spring up here and there. Only the bold ones will dare to venture further.

Perhaps the Realistic tourist guide is already in print. Read "Culture Shock: Pakistan" by Karin Mittmann and Zafar Ihsan.
