Pak-Uzbek ties to grow with increased air links
LAHORE, July 20 (APP)- Uzbekistan Airways has started direct flights from three Pakistani cities - Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, with five flights from Lahore, seven from Karachi and two from Islamabad to Tashkent every week.
The launch ceremony of Uzbek Airlines was held at a local hotel Wednesday night with Punjab ministers Muhammad Ajmal Cheema and Mian Imran Masood chief guests on the occasion, says a handout issued here on Thursday.
Ambassador of Uzbekistan, Mr Oybek Arif Usman, Ambassador of Pakistan to Uzbekistan, Sajjad Kamran, Country Manager Arif Ruzimurad and acting president LCCI, Abdul Basit were also present.
Addressing the ceremony, Ajmal Cheema said that relations between Pakistan and Uzbekistan will be further strengthened with the commencement of direct flights from Pakistan to Tashkent, as will the investment opportunities between the two countries with the exchange of trade and business delegations. This will further benefit the rapid economic growth in South Asia, he added.
The minister said the air travel time between Lahore and Tashkent which was 24 hours earlier, had now been shortened to barely 2.5 hours.
Imran Masood observed that Tashkent with its splendid Islamic background and the similarity of cultural and aesthetic heritage between the two countries was already a strong bond, and said that mutual exchange of cultural and educational delegations would further strengthen ties.
