Shortly after takeoff the airplane reportedly suffered engine problems. It struck an electric power line before crashing in a field. The F-27 broke up and caught fire.

I am posting a photograph of the ill-fated AP-BAL, shot a couple of months before its crash by Mr. Ali Mujtaba (http://www.flightsimpakistan.com). It was operating on (ISLAMABAD-GILGIT) route when Ali took the photograph from his house's roof top (ISLAMABAD: On 16th May, 2006).

HC judges, army officers among 45 killed in PIA Fokker tragedy

MULTAN (updated on: July 10, 2006, 19:25 PST): A Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed into a field in a ball of flames shortly after take-off on Monday, killing all 45 passengers and crew, officials said.

The ageing Fokker 27 turbo-prop twisted and turned before plummeting to the ground in a suburb of Multan, witnesses said. The airliner was on a domestic flight to Lahore.

"All passengers and crew are dead in the air crash," local administrator Iftikhar Babar told AFP. "A fire broke out after the crash and all bodies were charred beyond recognition."

The passengers included two high court judges, a university vice chancellor and two military brigadiers, he said.

Some of the burned corpses lay in a heap while others were still strapped into their seats in the wreckage of the plane, which was ablaze for almost an hour, an AFP correspondent at the scene said.

A propeller and the tail of flight PK-688 were scorched but largely intact while the rest of the plane was reduced to a heap of ripped metal, shredded luggage and ashes.

Rescue workers from charities, the army and the civil aviation authority wore masks as they sifted through the debris and removed the bodies. Officials said 41 passengers and four crew were on board, comprising 37 men and eight women, all of them Pakistanis.

President Pervez Musharraf expressed grief after the crash while Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz ordered an inquiry, Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

It was the worst crash involving a PIA plane in 14 years, after an Airbus A300 crashed into hills in Nepal in 1992 killing 167 people.

Witnesses said they were used to low-flying planes from the airport but said they saw the green and white plane veering from side to side before diving and hitting an electricity pole.

"This plane was at the usual low altitude. But then it started wobbling in the air before it went down in the fields. There was a huge bang and a ball of fire," resident Allah Bakhsh, 40, said at the crash site in Multan's Suraj Miani suburb.

The plane crashed two minutes after take off and made no contact with air traffic control, PIA deputy managing director Syed Farooq Shah told reporters.

The plane was 38 years old and entered service with PIA in 1979, but the airframe was still within its specified life-span, he added.

"There was no technical fault up until the recent flight but an inquiry has been set up under the safety branch of PIA," he said.

Civil Aviation Authority director general Pervez Akhtar said the cause of the crash was not yet known.

One official at the site, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the plane tried to land in the field after developing an apparent technical fault but struck an electricity cable.

Rescue officials said they had recovered 35 bodies so far. One woman was dragged out alive but died shortly afterwards from burns, they said.

"The bodies were so mutilated that I could not recognise them as that of men or women," said Irfan Ahmad, a doctor with the Edhi Foundation, Pakistan's largest charity.

PIA's fleet of eight Fokker aircraft came under scrutiny last year over the number of hours they had flown. They are due to be replaced by new ATR 42 aircraft.

In February 2003 an air force F27 crashed in fog-shrouded mountains near the north-western city of Kohat, killing air force chief Air Chief Marshal Mushaf Ali, his wife and 15 others.

President, PM saddened over plane tragedy

ISLAMABAD (updated on: July 11, 2006, 02:15 PST): President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shuakat Aziz have expressed grief and sorrow over loss of lives in a tragic plane crash near Multan on Monday.

In a condolence message, the president offered his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed that Allah Almighty may grant fortitude and strength to them to bear this irreparable loss. He also prayed for the departed souls.

The prime minister, on the other hand, also prayed for the departed souls and expressed sympathy with the bereaved families and prayed Allah Almighty to give them strength to bear the loss with patience and fortitude.

The prime minister has also asked senior Minister for Defence Rao Sikandar Iqbal to conduct an inquiry into the tragic incident to ascertain the causes behind the air crash to prevent their recurrence.

May they all rest in peace. May Allah help all familly members and keep them strong through this tragedy.

According to what I hear which I hope is true is that all the remaining Fokker have been grounded.

I blame this incident not so much on PIA but on the CAA for allowing old/outdated/overused aircraft to fly. Hopefully shaheen and aero asia have learned a major lesson by this and will by modern aircraft.

This is indeed a very sad day for Pakistani famillies and PIA fans worldwide

Inquiry should be launched immediately and if PIA is at fault, due compensation should be made to families. As much as i love fokkers, i think its time for PIA to ground them.

ISLAMABAD: PIA’s plane was crashed due to operational problem, said Civil Aviation sources.

The sources told ‘The News’ that according to a preliminary report of a team of experts, sent to Multan to probe the cause of disaster, the plane crashed due to operational problem. “The aircraft took off with Flap Zero,” the sources quoting the report said. Although, the plane had capacity to take off with ‘Flap Zero’ but it was overweight, they added.

“This is, simply, a human error in such situation when the plane was overweight, the weather was hot and flaps were closed”, sources maintained. “The captain overlooked to open the flaps or he ignored as a routine,” sources maintained. It could be ignored in cold weather and less weight, they added. But the pilot took risk in hot weather and overweighed plane. “The weight was almost double of the capacity and the hundreds of mango cartons were loaded on the plane,” sources disclosed.

Meanwhile, a 35-member team of Emergency Response Centre (ERC) has been sent to Multan for a detailed investigation of the disaster. The team would submit the inquiry report to the ministry of defence as soon as possible, the sources added. “It may take a couple of days or even two months,” they maintained.

When Is PIA going to learn that they got to stop overloading their planes?? Instead of blaming flight operations which they really need to blame they blamed the guy that cannot defend himself because he is dead! In otherwords they want to close this incident fast instead of solving it.

Was the mangoes so important to fly on an overloaded a/c? Why didnt they do what other airline ops do and offload the cargo to fix the weight? I think that if ops did their job right the Captain, his crew and pax would have been alive today possibly because the plane, if it was to crash for other reasons would not have come down as fast.

Brothers and sisters the Captain is not the one at fault if ops could have prevented this in the first place. Any excess luggage to be loaded even after the a/c has reached maximum weight should have been offloaded and sent by other means to their destination.

We should all speak up and also next time when you want to travel with extra weight make sure the stuff that you are carrying is worth more to you than your own life and fellow passengers and crew. Otherwise leave it for next time or pay for courier service. There are weight limits for a reason and that reason is not only for the airliner to make money but also to keep you alive and their birds in the air.

Just recite a Fateh for all the people who lost their lives in this tragic accident.

Please all of you dont jump into conclusion untill the inquiry is completed, We say alot and sometime its very painful for people who lost their loved ones. both the pilots were very qualified and very professional.

They are lot of factors involved in the accident, e.g.

1. Flight Duty Time Limitation ( Whether crew was rested and not flying for consecutive days)

2. Fatigue

3. Aircraft Technical Status ( Any Previous reported snags)

4. Aircraft Loading

5. Weather etc..

So we should all just wait for the inquiry report. Its very easy to put a blame on pilots, since they are no more in this world and its easier for others also to get rid of all the inquiries.

I have observe lot of safety investigation and believe me the real picture was always different. everyone would blame the pilots and in real would be someone else.

So i request all of you once again just pray for everyone and Pray that Allah give them the place in Jannah......Ameen
