PIA to write off dues of 12 airlines

Post by B777240ER »

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is writing off Rs 40 million owed by 12 international airlines that have suspended their operations to Pakistan. Official PIA documents state that 35 airlines owe PIA money, and the corporation is processing a case to write off the dues of 12 airlines because they have stopped operating in the country. The PIA management is in touch with the 23 other airlines and trying to recover the money they owe, according to the documents. PIA says it has recovered Rs 28 million from these airlines but they still owe Rs 16 million. The airlines are not members of the International Air Transport Association. A Finance Ministry official said PIA should have been more careful in its dealings with non-IATA airlines. The documents do not identify the 12 airlines whose dues will be written off. The defaulting airlines include Pan Am; Syrian Arab Airlines, Iraqi Airways; Somalia Airlines, Air Korea, Libyan Arab, Zambia Airways, Air Zaire, Myanmar Airways, Ariana Afghan Air, Airmax Airways, Air Tran Airways, VASP, Tajik Airlines, Summit Airlines, Turkmenistan Airlines, Modiluft, Aeroflot, Inter Air Service, SQ Handling Khi, Air Littoral, Air Comores, ZAS Air of Egypt, Tyrolean Air, Muk Air, Aur Biyrb Express, Eural Air, Gambia Airways, Bhoja Airways, Air Maldives, Air Sinai, Eastern Australia Air, and Flanders Air. sadia qureshi

PIA might be short of cash, but the airlines listed aern't exactly the example of cash cows either. Some of them don't even exist anymore. What choice do they have?

Maybe these debts are very old and there is no point carrying this bad debt in books from one year to another when you know most of those airlines that owe money are gone for years.

But PIA has not revealed, the age of the debt in the press release.

I am sure the excuse Ariana and Iraqi have given about their bills is that was the doing of the previous adminstration. We are not responsible - in others they are denial.
