PIA doing very well in all airline-related operational indicators: Kirmani
KARACHI, May 31 (APP) - Continuing with the series of communication meetings with PIA staff all over the network, the Chairman and CEO, PIA, Tariq Kirmani addressed PIA employees at Faisalabad Wednesday.
According to a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) press release issued here, Kirmani told the employees that PIA was doing very well in all the airline-related operational indicators.
However, he pointed out, all these improvements of the past year were eaten up by the high and uncontrollable fuel prices.
Many changes have taken place in the airline which were not yet quite visible as they will take time to be effective and be a part of airline’s every day working pattern.
In this regard, he specially mentioned that customer is more important and we should try to satisfy him in every way - from the time he booked his seat till the flight ends and he collects his baggage.
PIA is a service industry and a commercial company and there is no reason why it should not run like that, Kirmani said.
He said for the airline he is a salesman first, and Chairman thereafter. “All of us, including me are salesman for PIA.â€ÂÂ
He spoke about punctuality of PIA flights which, he said, was now 91 per cent with a 95 percent target in view to be achieved and this can happen with only teamwork.
He stated that airline’s different departments have to collaborate and work together in sending a flight on time. He congratulated the employees for their efforts in this regard.
Chairman PIA referred to huge fuel impact on which, otherwise, would have made a difference to our great performance.
He said the fuel cost has risen in one and half years from 28 per cent to massive 47 per cent of PIA’s total revenues. Seen in this perspective, the airlines’ operating losses in 2004 was stood at Rs 54 million and, if fuel price had been taken to be the same as in 2004, PIA would have made a massive profit of Rs. 3.6 billion in 2005.
Kirmani said the fuel bill has risen from Rs. 18 billion in 2004 to Rs. 26.5 billion in 2005. Therefore in order to survive it was incumbent upon us to try to further reduce costs and strive harder to increase revenues for which performance of every employee is very important not only for the airline but also for theirselves.
He spoke about new fleet plan and the induction of new aircrafts to reduce the fleet age from 21 to about 9 years.
He mentioned the induction of new airplanes in PIA, like 12 Boeing 777s and the 7 ATRs to replace the Fokker aircraft, starting from end of May.
He talked about PIA’s 3C strategy which, he explained, stood for Convenience, Comfort and competitiveness. All our efforts should focus around these areas for PIA to improve, he emphasised.
