In November 1967, a Fokker F27 Friendship became the first PIA aircraft to land at then newly constructed Dera Ismail Khan Airport.

1997 PIA timetable shows 20 weekly Fokker F27 flights (without aircraft change) linking Dera Ismail Khan with cities of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta and Zhob.

PIA ATR 42-500 (AP-BHM) at Dera Ismail Khan Airport as flight PK689 operated from Islamabad to Karachi via Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, Zhob & Quetta.

Work on the construction of greenfield airport in Dera Ismail Khan to start in 2025.

* Aerodrome Reference Code 4E on about 1,817 acres of land.

* Runway length of minimum 11,000 feet for Boeing 777 category wide-body aircraft.

* Parallel taxiway and apron for Code E aircraft parking.

* Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) to cater for 1 million passengers per annum, to meet next 20 years requirement with the provision of Passenger Boarding Bridges.

* Landside infrastructure facilities including car park, Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) staff complex/residential facilities, Airports Security Force (ASF) camp, cargo area etc.

D.I Khan is a 4-5 hours drive away from Multan, Peshawar or Islamabad, air travel can be a good alternate. The airport has potential to generate good traffic from south KPK and areas like south waziristan, mianwali etc. PIA should consider regular operations here once the new airport is opened though there really wasn't a need for a new one. I assume one major factor why PIA doesn't operate to these smaller stations anymore is probably because of the lack of refuelling facilities here.
