Re: Mari Petroleum Chartered Helicopter Crashes in Waziristan
As per eye witnesses (can't comment on the authenticity, but appear plausible), the helicopter experienced engine failure just after take off. Pilots attempted to return to the helipad. During final flare the tail hit the ground and rotors chopped the tail boom and main rotor blades too got severed. The helicopter with fuselage intact came to rest, but with remaining engine running and rotors (whatever was left) turning, as shown in the first picture/video.
The disaster happened thereon. As shown in the second picture
But this still does not explain the destruction of cockpit. Will wait for official report
This should have been a safe outcome and most likely survivable. Fuselage and cockpit in tact.![]()
The disaster happened thereon. As shown in the second picture
For some unknown reason, the crew did not cut the engine, either shocked or incapacitation. Broken and out balance main rotor, while turning induced severe ground resonance (a phenomenon common to helicopters) which resulted in violent shaking of the fuselage. As a result one of the engine's mounts broke and the engine fell into the fwd cabin and resulted in the fuselage split.
Here helicopter fuselage appears broken and cockpit damaged. Main rotor blades also appear damaged/broken.
But this still does not explain the destruction of cockpit. Will wait for official report
