PIA ATR Technical Faults Discussed at Supreme Appellate Court Gilgit-Baltistan

Post by Abbas Ali »

Supreme Appellate Court Gilgit-Baltistan has directed Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to submit a report on the operational life of PIA ATR aircraft deployed by the airline on flights between Islamabad and Gilgit and reasons behind technical faults in these flights.

In September Chief Justice of Gilgit-Baltistan Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan took suo moto notice on PIA ATR flights operated on Gilgit-Islamabad route.

PIA's chief technical officer informed the court that ATR planes are supposed to complete 70 thousand flight cycles of which only half have been completed. Chief Justice Shamim Khan asked: "Then why are technical faults emerging in ATR flights?"

PIA ATR 42-500 (aircraft registration AP-BHI) at Gilgit Airport.

Presently, AP-BHI is the only operational ATR aircraft in PIA fleet.

Sister ship AP-BHH is apparently inactive these days:

Other private operators do not want to bear the losses incurred by operating these routes. I guess paying the fines of not operating them is far more economical.

and for that they need turboprop aircraft, why would they acquire them just to operate this one route where weather causes frequent issues.

AP-BHN retired in 2015, most probably cannibalized to keep other airframes active/air worthy :-k

True. This has always been an issue in PIA, who was forced to serve these socioeconomic routes.

I always wondered why PIA could not use the leased ATR72s for routes to Gilgit, Chitral and Skardu, rather then putting them in storage.
