AP-BFU, AP-BFV, AP-BFW
The 3 743's of PIA which are to probably go are AP-BFU/V/W. BFU and BFV were both delivered to CX in '86, and BFW in '85. They are like 20/21 years old and its a good time to retire them. It is also working out very expenive for maintaing these aging aircraft.
The 747-400s are probably going to be the 747-400 combi version that they will get. There are ex-united airlines 777s for sale at a good price and maybe PK are looking at those to buy? Don't forget that they will make money for selling those 3 743s, and it might be nearly enough to buy 1 second hand 777. The UA 777s are the basic 777 not ER. However, they would do fine on the routes to the UK and Saudia.

the pia corporate plans envisages the retention of 743 aircraft till 2011. thats why the plan stretches to 5 years, following the induction of newer aircraft. never has pia retired a 747 so early in its history, specially now when they are the backbone of the schedule during the hajj umra season in the absence of the ab4s. the 743 fleet as a whole has logged much less hours then an average 20 year old airplane round about 50000, which barely takes them up to half their useful life. with combis having reached an age which is larger by orders of proportions , logic would have it that they be gone first. however it has now been decided that they be retired till 2008. a pair of aircraft with hours of up to 70-8000 hours will precede the retirement of larger more useful aircaft almost half their age in terms of flight hours..! the flight schedule shows that one 742 is back. seems like pia is plying the 747 fleet up to the brim. they re retirement seems out of the question right now.!! also 737s have reached the 21 year mark with perhaps more hours. they too retire in 2010.

There are 3 ex-UA B744's which are 12-14 years old
What engine type will they be?
I want PK to go with base B773 which could be used for LHR,JED,MAN and JFK.
For the rest of the routes which B743 is used, PK could increase the frequency. For example on KHI-RUH instead of using 2 weekly B743s they could use 4/5 weekly A310's. But this of course depends on the bilaterals aswell

The UA 777's would be just as expensive, if not more costly to operate, because they are PW equipped- non ER variants and have no better operating economics that the 743's dont offer already.
If PIA acquired 744's on the other hand, that would make more sense, since capacity wise, the fleet stays the same- but again, the issue of the engines comes into play, as those too are PW, and not the GE/RR that PIA currently operates...

Maybe PIA are looking at getting the base version of the 777-300. These would be a perfect replacment for their 743s as in a two class layout they would get 49/385=434. PIAs 743's accomodate 433 seats in the two class layout. RR and GE engines are available on this aircraft (773). Yes, i don't think anything will happen to the 743s until 2008/9, and the three 743s will be 23/24 years old then.

Only PW and RR are available on the 777-300, whereas the GE is found only on the -300ER.smarties wrote:Maybe PIA are looking at getting the base version of the 777-300. As PIA has the 777-300ER due for delivery in 2007 anyway, I cant see them spending money (that they evidently dont have) on a new type/engine for a short period of time, unless its leased.

Boeing777, according to this information you are wrong, GE is available on the 777-300 AND 777-300ER:Only PW and RR are available on the 777-300, whereas the GE is found only on the -300ER.
777-300 - Either two 400kN (90,000lb) Pratt & Whitney PW-4090 turbofans, or 436kN (98,000lb) PW-4098s, or 409kN (92,000lb) Rolls-Royce Trent 892s, or 409kN (92,000lb) General Electric GE90-92Bs.
777-300ER - 512 kN (115,300lb) General Electric GE90-115B
PIA probably does has the money otherwise would they make all these plans????? And the 777-300ER are due for delivery in 2008 not 2007.[/u]

My bad- I do know that the 777-300 does have the GE option available, but there is no airline operating that type/combination.
If PIA *really* had half as much money as it plans for, it would be bigger than EK.
Dont forget, EK was started courtesy of a 737-300 and A300 (I think) from PIA.
Look where EK is today and look where PIA is. Says it all really.

As was stated before, the UA 747s have PW engines, which will increase the operating costs substantially.Falcon598 wrote:I think they should look seriously at the 744, hopefully soon they get rid of the combis and 74M and look at these, they are a pretty god option if you ask me. Also I think United has some sitting in the desert waiting to be bought or scrapped.
I believe, but am not a 100% certain that these use RR engines, so there would be some savings as far as maintenance.CoyBoy wrote: Boeing were selling two ex-Malaysia Airlines 744M on their website.
Anyway, according to All Nippon Airways near-term plans, they plan to dispose of all 44 of their 744s. Even if we assume that some of these are in the high density configuration and others will be converted to cargo, there should still be some planes that will be put on the secondary market. PIA could acquire 10 of these and modify 3-4 of them to combis.

The baseline 777-300 has not been ordered by any airline with GE engines and the only airlines that operate them are:
EK (RR)
SQ (RR)
TG (RR)
JL (PW)
KE (PW)
CX (RR)
ANA (PW)
MAS used 744's with both GE and PW engines and I'm guessing the 74E's which Boeing has are the GE powered ones. If PIA does go for the 74E, they should have at least 3 if not 4 as the 2 74M's currently in the fleet have quite a high utilisation and on the occasions when one of them is out of commission, due to maintenance or like that accident that happened at ISB 2 years ago, the whole combi schedule goes out the window.
