PK-661’s black box sent to France for decoding
MOHAMMAD ASGHAR
RAWALPINDI: The Safety Investigation Board (SIB) has sent the flight data recorder, commonly known as the black box, of the ill-fated Pakistan International Airlines flight PK-661 that crashed near Havelian on Dec 7 to France for decoding.
All 47 people on board were killed in the crash.
“After getting the black box decoding report, the investigator will lift the debris from the crash site and will shift it to BBIA to find out what actually caused the plane crash,” Aviation Division Secretary Irfan Elahi told Dawn.
He said that the work to lift the debris of the ATR-42 plane would start soon. “Basically, the black box decoding report will identify the real cause of the plane crash and the investigators will start their work from that point while assessing the specific areas of the crashed plane as per the report,” he said.
On the other hand, the site alongside the runway had been selected to dump the debris and wreckage of the ATR-42, which the authorities said would be removed soon from the crash site. Experts of France-based turboprop aircraft manufacture ATR who had been in Islamabad since last Monday to assist Pakistani authorities investigating the ATR-42 plane crash had left for France on Saturday.
They had held meetings with officials concerned and visited the crash site, some 80 kilometres north of Benazir Bhutto International Airport.
A senior official told Dawn that the French company is preparing its report on the plane crash and it had interviewed some officials and reviewed record of the air control tower.
He said that experts from the engine manufacturing company also arrived in the country and brought some pieces of the ATR’s engine with them to make analysis report. They would send the report soon.
Sources close to the investigation told Dawn that the investigators were assessing the things like engine failed, pilot reduced speed, dropped altitude, free fall due to structure damage, pilot shut down the engine and shut down the malfunctioned engine and what seemingly happened in the incident.
They said the investigators got initial report from the ATC that flight signalled an engine failure at 4.12pm at 13,375 feet height. However, they said as soon as the engine failure was reported, the aircraft started descending and within a minute the PK-661 disappeared from the radar.

Re: PIA ATR Flight PK-661 Crashes Near Havelian
As per one of our media group, the altitude of ill-fated flight was "70,000 ft" when it contacted ATC. As if this incident wasn't enough to make mockery of Pakistani aviation, our media group is making entire thing far more stupid. We really need some educated aviation journalists who dont come up with theories like "engine started rotating in opposite direction"

Re: PIA ATR Flight PK-661 Crashes Near Havelian
The Boeing 737 has performed without accident since 1982 in PIA. This is thought provoking when considering the series of accidents which have marred the outlook of the F-27 and now the operation of the ATR 42-500. We are informed in the press release by the CAA that the ATR 42-500 is also no bed of roses in its technical shortcomings. The F-27 was getting too old and maybe we needed a more recent aircraft, but its performance was technically sound. I have not overlooked the C-130, two of which were bought under PIA's name. They would be superb if we could get our hands on some, also in view of the increase in traffic with the construction of the CPEC, PIA may soon have its hands full and face a seat shortage in this area. We also know that the military cargo four engine turbo-propeller aircraft from Europe, the 400 something (I forget the actual name) has teething problems with the engines and propellers which are never ending.
The jet aircraft is much safer than either the piston engine or the turbo-propeller. First of all there are no propellers, a source of technical problems. If it is at all possible considering the terrain and runway lengths, operation to airfields like Chitral and Gilgit should be seriously considered using jets.

But these propellers are not meant for mountainous regions.

The process of shifting aircraft wreckage from crash site to Islamabad Airport expected to begin today.
A road to the crash site has been prepared. Maybe unpaved/dirt road/track.

Shifting of plane wreckage to Islamabad begins
RASHID JAVED
ABBOTTABAD: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) staff started shifting the crashed plane’s wreckage from Havelian to Islamabad on Friday amid tight security and the process is likely to take a couple of days to complete.
Officials said that in order to shift the wreckage, a special jeep road measuring 2km was completed on a war footing from a link road to the site of the crash. Special funds were provided for the purpose by local MPA Aurangzeb Nalotha, who is PML-N’s parliamentary leader in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
The officials said that services of a local contractor had been hired by the airline to shift the wreckage of the flight PK-661 from the hills of Batlongi village. The wreckage is spread around 300 square metres.
Parts of the crashed plane have been assembled and dumped on the roadside where their packing was done by PIA and Civil Aviation Authority staff under the supervision of the safety and quality manager of PIA, North, Syed Atif Shah, in specially-built cartons.
Havelian DSP Khurshid Tanoli, who has been asked to make arrangements in this regard, said that parts of the engine had been moved to Islamabad in the first consignment and efforts were being made to pack the entire wreckage without dismantling any part of it, in the shortest possible time.
