PIA Boeing 747-200B Model With P&W Engines in New Livery

Post by Abbas Ali »

Saw this PIA Boeing 747 aircraft model in recent news photo about initiation of training of PIA Flight Academy Cadet Pilots.

The aircraft model is painted in new PIA livery but seems to be missing 'Pakistan International' titles below 'PIA' logo on fuselage.

The rear section, behind green & mustard colour band, should be in off-white (cream/sand) colour.

The painter has painted entire engines in white colour. Only engine cowling (fan cover) should have been in off-white colour with bare metal engine intake lip. The portion behind engine cowling should have been in bare metal colour and exhaust cone should have been in black colour.

It's a model of a Boeing 747-200B with Pratt & Whitney (P&W) JT9D engines and technically it should have been left in 1980s green & gold or 1990s sporty livery as P&W powered Boeing 747s in PIA fleet did not receive liveries that were introduced after 1990s sporty livery.

Abbas this is the model that sits at the entrance of the PTC. It used to be a 1:50 scale Westway 747-200 cutaway model originally in the 70's/80's green/gold livery and PIA got a few of these models back in the late 70's. They were subsequently changed into the 90's chevron livery and now finally the current livery. In addition to the inaccuracies you have mentioned above, also note the lame attempt at adding extra windows on the upper deck to give that '747-300 SUD' look to the model and painting over the view of the upper deck lounge. The wings and engines have been painted completely in light grey, not white which it seems as the photo is misleading, and the engine cowlings in light beige. The only thing I was happy to see was that it was still intact and in one piece and the quality of the paint job was superb. Other than that the model has been completely ruined, lost its originality, value and appeal. A model like this is only original once and as you said in order to preserve the history behind this plane, it should have been kept in its original form/delivery colors with perhaps a similar sized 777 in the current new livery offering viewers a chance to see PIA then and now.

In comparison, here is a similar model of Olympic Airways which they decided to preserve in its original form by hanging it from the ceiling of the domestic terminal at Hellinikon Airport.

Thank you Moin for details and also for sharing better photos of those two PIA Boeing 747-200 models.

Very disappointed to see those two Boeing 747-200 models senselessly ruined. They should have retained their old colours.

The pics of the PIA 747 are of the same model taken from different angles. It sits at the entrance of the PTC. The entire cockpit view, spiral staircase and upper deck lounge have been painted over. Notice how much more you can see on the Olympic model. A similar model at PIA's ticket office in Sidco Centre was still in the 90's chevron livery the last time I saw it (on that model they completely painted over the whole model and covered up the cutaway display) and it will probably get its turn soon to receive the new livery and the extra 747-300 windows on the upper deck.

I didn't realize what a cobbling of the paint job this was! Oh the humanity! :(
