ISLAMABAD, Nov 28 (APP): Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Sher Afgan Niazi Tuesday informed the Senate that no PIA cabin crew member has been sent on leave for growing beard.
Replying to a point of order raised yesterday (Monday) by Senator Khalid Soomro, the minister said the PIA has sent 73 members on leave for various disciplinary reasons.
"Of these 48 are females while 25 are men. But I can categorically state on the floor of this august house that none of the men has been sent on leave for growing beard," Niazi said.
He said the senator has been given wrong information which is misleading.
"If the member can prove even five of these men having beards, I will order an inquiry and send the matter to house standing committee," he added.
The minister said that reasons for sending the crew members on leave included, poor personality, grooming and hygiene, weak English langauge and poor service record.
"They have been given three months to improve these deficiencies after which they will be back on job."
Niazi made it clear that these 73 persons have been sent on leave with full emoluments and salaries. Deputy Chairman Mir Jan Jamali, who was chairing the session, said that poor English proficiency can be improved by sending the crew members on a refresher course.

Over 100 PIA crew grounded to 'get smart'
AMRAIZ KHAN
LAHORE: PIA management has grounded its more than 100 crew members and sent them on forced leave for three months to overcome their professional deficiencies, sources in the airline confided to The Nation here on Wednesday.
However, a PIA spokesman said that these crew members were not at all grounded.
Those grounded included senior pursers, flight pursers, airhostesses and flight stewards, some of them were near their retirement, they added.
The sources maintained that Suitability Board of PIA had warned more than 448 crew members to overcome their deficiencies.
The said staff was found in severe violation of rules and regulations and they were charged with over weight, poor job knowledge, poor English speaking skills and poor supervisory skills. There were only 9 people from Lahore station while most of the affected belonged to Karachi station.
A flight purser seeking anonymity said that the decision of punishment was completely on merit and justified as these people in the flight service never seemed to be a PIA employee by their personality, with over weight to such an extent that they could not cross the oily area of apron some times.
PIA was facing already severe shortage of the cabin crew up to 670 people and Haj operation was about to start due to which more people were not sent on forced leave and the staff having minor lapses were only warned by the Board.
The Airline management had hired internal employees as crew members who were also not possessing required qualifications but were hired due to various pressures.
When contacted the spokesman of PIA, said that no employee was grounded rather airline has given duty off to 73 crew members just to get themselves groomed and smart.

Amazingly they said the crews were grounded because it includes one reason, as their English wasn’t good. I thought their English language skills were checked and tested at the time they were interviewed.
I wonder why do they conduct interviews if they cant even see the English level of the candidate…

Who cares if their English Speaking Skills are not up to par!!!!
English is not our Mother tongue! But I guess we all strive to speak English even if it sounds like the "7-11 (gas station) accent"
The day we start respecting our national language "Urdu", or as for this matter our other provincial languages & dialects, we might feel proud of being Pakistanis.
Since I live overseas, whenever Pakistani Government Officials come here and speak English, I just wonder who police's their "English Lingo Skills"
In all honesty only their mommies can comprehend what in the heck they are saying!!!!
Maybe PIA should "Focus" on their (Cabin Crew's) Customer Service skills.....because a smile or a polite gesture will go a long way even if their "Angrazi bolnay ke Skills" are poor.
Fly Safe!
