150 PIA employees sacked
By Baqir Sajjad Syed
ISLAMABAD, Jan 15: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), has sacked nearly 150 employees in the first phase of a retrenchment plan. “The national flag carrier has prematurely retired 43 regular employees and fired about 100 contractual workers because of inefficiency and under-performance, besides being surplus,†PIA’s spokesman Nasir Jamal confirmed on Monday.
He said those sacked were nearing superannuation but were inefficient and blocking the career path of competent people.
The decision to lay off the staff, he said, was in pursuance of the board of directors’ decision to restructure the airlines and on the recommendation of section heads. Sources said that there were plans to lay off more staff.
Those sacked in the first phase included general managers (three), cabin crew and secretarial staff.
PIA has been in financial tailspin with its monthly losses of more than Rs1 billion and current liabilities exceeding its assets by more than Rs20 billion.
Internal auditors in their half-yearly report for the period ending on June 30, 2006, had stated that conditions indicated the existence of a material uncertainty, which might cast significant doubts about the corporation’s ability to continue as a growing concern.

The financial woes at PIA and plane vs. employee ratio makes me believe that PIA needs to tighten their belts. Zerbaer, even 2500 sackings alone will not bring PIA out of the woods.
Perhaps PIA should shed more or less 10000 - 15000 employees to look more profitable. Particularly highly paid "safarshis". There are far too many GM's and Directors there. I have a feeling that most of these folks are just "ghost employees" (they are on payroll but never show up for work, or simply non-existant).
There is another thread about Kirmani getting 3 years salary in advance. In Mr. Kirmani's defence, let me ask what right these bloody law makers have to question Mr. Kirmani's integrity? They have to look at mirror themselves before acusing others.
It is because of these rotten Law makers (Senators, MNA's and MPA's) Pakistan is in trouble as is; but that may be a subject of another thread.
Just my 2 cents worth! God Bless Pakistan and PIA [-o<
