PIA domestic market growth up 28pc

KARACHI: Chairman and CEO, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) while giving a corporate presentation at PIA Head Office on Thursday said everything is heading towards improvement.

Kirmani said that PIA’s domestic market growth was up 28 per cent in 2005 owing to increased demand from major cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

"Fuel prices remain the biggest challenge for us, whereas 40 per cent of the revenue goes in loss if the carrier is old," he disclosed while speaking on the organisation’s sufferings.

"PIA as major representative of the country competes on international level, sharing a tremendous responsibility of the country," he said.

"We operate our functions with 7 ‘S’s i.e. Strategy, Staff, Style, Structure, System, Skill, Shared values," Kirmani said adding, "We practice zero tolerance for corruption and malpractice while knowing the fact that corruption would never be zero."

While elaborating the developments within the organisation, the chairman disclosed that new aircraft would be launched while some old ones will be retired. Rebuilding of some old aircraft is also in the pipeline.

He said the tail of PIA carriers on domestic routes would be given a modern and better look and said it was a major development.

He said that new recruitment for cockpit, cabin, and other units takes place on a regular basis, in order to meet the increased requirements of the crew. PIA canteen, which was in a dilapidated condition, has also been renovated recently.

SATS, a Singapore franchise has been assigned to work on PIA’s kitchen side that would help us improve the menu as well as the quality of food.

New teams such as Cross functional teams and Incubation team, and also various development programs have been set up within the organisation in order to improve standards and ensure transparency overall. Guests were also briefed about the functions of PIA Call Centre and Simulator at PIA Training Centre during a short visit to both the centres at PIA Head Office.
