PIA didn’t pay lease due to pandemic, says minister
ISLAMABAD: A day after a Pakistan International Airlines plane was impounded by Malaysian authorities due to a British court case over the aircraft’s $14 million lease dispute, Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan said on Saturday that the national carrier did not pay the lease due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Talking to reporters in Chak Beli Khan, the aviation minister said that PIA got two aircraft on lease in 2015 but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the airline failed to pay the dues last year.
He said that a case was pending in a United Kingdom’s court and the airline was contesting the case in the UK but there had been no ruling in it yet.
He said that Malaysian court gave the decision without getting PIA’s stance on the issue. “Our lawyers will appear in the UK court on Jan 22 and in Kuala Lumpur court on Jan 24,” he said.

Ah ha in the land of the pure if an excessive bill is received for electricity , gas , water and other utilities the procedure required to be adopted is to first pay whatever amount is billed then fight the case.
Without the pre-condition of billed payment the case would never be considered.

Maybe pia tried to use their non-payment as a negotiation strategy. The 14 million usd quoted for two aircraft suggests they're behind around 12 months on payments (assuming a reasonable 2015 lease rate), so the amount quoted in the media is probably correct.

According to news sources:
PIA to initiate investigation against airline's own three officers for sending AP-BMH involved in payment dispute in a court to Malaysia instead of one of Boeing 777 aircraft owned by the airline.
The airline suffered loss of more than one crore rupees including expenses to bring passengers home through Emirates and Qatar Airways.

PIA will also investigate whether due to negligence or under a plan AP-BMH with lease payment dispute was sent to Kuala Lumpur to get the aircraft impounded by Malaysian authorities, according to news sources.

Sounds like PIA knew not to get these aircraft out of Pakistan, and wanted to send their own B777 abroad instead. So plan or not, it had to come out.

Another case in British court regarding A320 payment of about 11 million dollars. PIA had stopped payment. Similar action will be taken on A320

Is this now not the perfect storm within which to shut the airline down and start afresh? It gets rid of a whole load of staff, majority of whom make little contribution towards the prosperity of the airline and leased planes can go back.

Re: PIA Boeing 777 Impounded by Malaysian Authorities in Kuala Lumpur
How can PIA staff know about the Malaysian court case, when the sleeping management did not know. Are they trying to imply that three employees who schedule aircraft flights knew about the court case in Malaysia and the top management did not???PIA will also investigate whether due to negligence or under a plan AP-BMH with lease payment dispute was sent to Kuala Lumpur to get the aircraft impounded by Malaysian authorities, according to news sources.
