London LHR to Karachi on Qatar 22-07-2020

Post by Zulfiqar »

Some photos from my travels in Qatar Airways from London to Karachi. Flight was from Terminal 2 instead of T4. Business lounges were not available due to COVID-19. QR was handing £20 food vouchers for business passengers to redeem from couple of food outlets that were open. The flight was half full and the overall experience was excellent. A359 Q-suite seat 4A was very comfortable and relatively private but the old business class seats on 77W on DOH-KHI section was not too bad either, especially for a shorter journey. However, a seamless inflight experience would be better.

View of economy section - one business class section was also empty.

At Doha-view of AP-BLS from lounge unloading mangoes.

Business lounge was open.

Could only eat the appetizer as was too full.

Overall, on-time, excellent flight and service.

Thanks for the great pictures and glad you had a good flight. I was dismayed at the fact at how dirty these air bridges were in Karachi.

Thank you Zulfiqar for sharing.

Does anyone have info about the device/instrument seen in this photo:

I think same thing is also visible in this photo from eighties.

Maybe some old historic equipment/device preserved?

Most welcome Baberblues and Abbas.
They have a lot of time to clean the place in the last few months.

Perhaps these aircrafts also need to be preserved or place on a museum.

My guess is that device was used in old days to denote direction of active runway. I have seen similar shaped devices at small airfields in UK but we hardly ever rely on them.

I sincerely hope too, I went to karachi after 16 years and I was very dissapointed with the state of the airport. The awful cobbles outside of the airport need to go, there is no need for this.

The device is called Wind T . It is still used to observe the wind direction.
Airplane is flown with brain not with stick and rudder.

Wind Direction Indicators

it is possible to determine wind direction and runway in use by visual wind indicators. A pilot should check these wind indicators.

The wind direction indicator can be a wind cone, wind sock, tetrahedron, or wind tee. These are usually located in a central location near the runway and may be placed in the center of a segmented circle.

Wind tees and tetrahedrons can swing freely and align themselves with the wind direction. Since a wind tee or tetrahedron can also be manually set to align with the runway in use, a pilot should also look at the wind sock for wind information, if one is available.
