Pakistan CAA Directed to Expedite Efforts to Develop Air Cargo Facilities at New Gwadar International Airport
November 21, 2024
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has directed the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to expedite efforts to develop air cargo facilities and establish business partnerships to position Gwadar as a hub for international airlines. The minister strongly criticized the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) and Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) for delays in developing a comprehensive plan to commercialize the recently-inaugurated new Gwadar International Airport.
The minister expressed disappointment at the two-year delay in commercialization. He stressed that if airlines are not attracted within six months of inauguration, the likelihood of success diminishes over the years.
The Additional DG PAA Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed, briefed the minister on safety evaluations and airfield regularization, assuring operational clearance by December.
Officials shared that new Gwadar International Airport has the capacity to handle 400,000 passengers annually, expandable to 1.6 million globally. To enhance airport utilization, the minister urged the development of commercial facilities such as restaurants, duty-free shops, and recreational amenities.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad, he said international airlines, currently using Oman and UAE for technical landings, can find Gwadar a cost-effective alternative and instructed officials to position Gwadar International Airport accordingly.
To incentivize long-haul flights from regions such as South Africa and Australia, the Minister proposed providing attractive rates for at least five years, emphasizing technical landings as a key strategy.
The minister concluded the meeting by setting a three-week deadline for PAA officials to present a comprehensive commercialization plan, including clear timelines and strategies for engaging stakeholders.

Re: New Gwadar International Airport Project
A complete waste of money.
A city that use to get 1 or 2 ATR42 flights a day got a 230 million dollar airport.
Might as well make new airports for Pasni, Turbat, Jiwani, and Khuzdar.
Even Skardu sees much more traffic that Gwader.
this airport was a money maker for the rulers, buy cheap land, sell it to CAA and make money.
This money should have been spent on upgrading Multan, or even Quetta airports.
They can operate cargo flights to Gwader and carry what in those planes???
Is there an industrial base in Gwader??

Re: New Gwadar International Airport Project
Is this protocol just for PIA or can the private carriers avail this as well? I think PIA can pull in some extra passengers from Gwadar if it upgrades to a320 operations. Many passengers would prefer a320 over the ATRs. Maybe work with Air China and codeshare for Beijing flights via Isb and Khi, connecting gwadar to Chinese cities.Abbas Ali wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 1:10 am PIA will not be required to pay airport charges for its flight operations at the new airport for one year.

Re: New Gwadar International Airport Project
Final testing and commissioning of Central Control & Command Room (CCCR) at new Gwadar International Airport completed successfully
Final testing and commissioning of the Central Control & Command Room (CCCR) of the new Gwadar International Airport set to be operational for the public next month has successfully been completed.
The Central Control & Command Room (CCCR) is the nerve centre of the airport, responsible for overseeing and coordinating various activities to ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the airport.
Testing and commissioning of civil, mechanical, technical, electronic, and communication segments have already been completed recently.
Weather can significantly impact airport operations. Airport's CCCR is capable of continuously monitoring weather conditions and forecasting potential hazards such as thunderstorms, dust storms, and other atmospheric conditions.
“One of the primary functions of CCCR is air traffic management. CCCR is designed to closely monitor the movement of aircraft on the ground and in the airspace surrounding the airport. It collaborates with air traffic control towers and regional air traffic control centres to ensure the safe and orderly flow of air traffic, efficient runway usage, and timely arrivals and departures,” a CAA official told Gwadar Pro.
The CAA official added that CCCR is responsible for effectively allocating essential airport resources. This includes managing airport gates, aircraft parking stands, and available runway capacity. By optimizing resource allocation, CCCR helps minimize delays, reduce congestion, and enhance overall airport efficiency.
In response to a query, a PCAA engineering department official said that real-time decision-making is a cornerstone of CCCR operations.
“It will operate 24/7, and its team of professionals, including air traffic controllers, operational supervisors, and support staff, is well-trained to respond promptly to changing circumstances.
With flights arriving and departing constantly, it has the capability to make quick and informed decisions to ensure seamless airport operations and minimize disruptions,” the official elaborated.
