Discussing the issue of fake degrees of some PIA employees and dismissal of some of them from service, Senate Standing Committee on Aviation on Wednesday observed that the PIA review committee should have maintained uniform criteria while dealing with cases of fake degrees of PIA employees.

“Action should also be taken against all those officers and board members who had appointed the people with fake degrees without verifying their documents,” chairman of the committee PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan said.

The committee noted that the dismissal of the staff after 30 to 40 years of their service to the organisation was a little bit harsh punishment and the management should have adopted a lenient attitude while taking action into the matter.

“The tough action of the PIA management has caused distress among hundreds of families of sacked PIA employees,” the chairman of the committee said.

Besides the staff at lower positions and cabin crew, 10 pilots have also been dismissed from service after their degrees were found fake.

The committee was informed by Advisor to President & CEO Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Air Vice Marshal Noor Abbas that the cases of fake degrees had been divided into three categories. Of 650 cases, 15 employees were called to record their statements before the committee. Documents of 300 dismissed staff members were reviewed by the committee.

The Senate standing committee chairman, however, said that he knew of a dozen employees who were still working in the PIA on fake degrees.

“If these 12 PIA employees could be dealt with compassion, others should also have been shown similar leniency,” Mushahidullah Khan said.

maybe PIA should make a committee to:

1. see how they can stop losing billions of rupees every month.

2. see how to keep their aircraft cabins and bathrooms clean.

3. see the 80 crore the government gave to PIA for IFE upgrade is not spent somewhere else.

4. make sure the three remaining ATR42s do not crash.

5. see if PIA can fire around 50% of its labor force and still function as a normal airline.

6. see if an actual airline professional can be hired rather than sifarishi CEOs that have no idea on how to run a commercial airline.

PIA defends sacking of fake degree holders

Jamal Shahid

Updated December 04, 2019

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Tuesday defended its decision of terminating services of its staff charged with possessing fake degrees setting aside lawmakers’ directions to show leniency.

“The decision of PIA management is in line with Supreme Court orders,” PIA’s Chief Human Resource Officer Air Commodore Amer Altaf told the Senate Standing Committee on Aviation.

At 15 meetings spreading over a year, the committee has been asking PIA to reconsider its ‘harsh’ decision and hand down less severe punishments to the staff which submitted fake degrees at the time of their inductions.

The committee had met to follow up on its directions and was disappointed with the PIA management’s ‘stubbornness’.

More than 700 PIA staff members had possibly submitted fake academic documents during their inductions. Some 467 staff members were dismissed. As many as 201 former employees had obtained stay orders from courts against their terminations. Among those terminated for possessing fake degrees were 16 pilots.

The committee, however, expressed displeasure with the management for not sharing a list of its officers and actions taken against those involved in the recruitment of employees on fake documentations. Chairman of the committee Senator Mushahidullah Khan of the PML-N has been demanding stern action against such officers.

“They should also be dealt with strictly,” he said.

Panel set up to help PIA review cases of sacked workers

Jamal Shahid

Updated February 13, 2020

ISLAMABAD:
Senator Mushahidullah Khan on Wednesday formed a sub-committee to assist the PIA management in reviewing cases of more than 700 employees who had been dismissed for possessing fake degrees and possibly reinstating them.

“Most of them are poor people. The management should have taken a lenient stance instead of a harsh action of terminating their services,” pleaded chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Aviation at a meeting of the committee.

It has been over a year now that Mushahidullah Khan has been urging the management of Pakistan International Airlines to reconsider its ‘harsh’ decision and hand down less severe punishments to the staff that submitted fake degrees at the time of their inductions.

More than 700 PIA staff members had submitted fake academic documents at the time of their inductions.

Some 467 staff members were dismissed. As many as 201 former employees had obtained stay orders from courts against termination of their services. Among those terminated for possessing fake degrees were 16 pilots.

The committee expressed displeasure with the management for not sharing list of its officers and actions taken against those involved in the recruitment of employees on fake documents.

Chairman of the committee Senator Mushahidullah Khan of the PML-N has been demanding stern action against such officers also. “They should also be dealt with strictly,” he said.

Emphasising on equal treatment across the board, the senator also gave example of some PIA employees who had been retained by the organisation despite possessing fake documents.

The adviser to the PIA CEO, Air Vice Marshal Noor Abbas, told the committee that he was personally reviewing 80 per cent cases.

“They all, except three or four individuals, have admitted to have submitted fake documents. Many tampered with education certificates by changing dates and numbers,” Noor Abbas told members.

He informed the committee that an inquiry had been launched to determine employees who had submitted fake degrees but were still employed by the national flag carrier.

PIA has been defending its decision to terminate the services of its staff charged with possessing fake degrees, setting aside lawmakers’ directives to show leniency. The PIA management says that its decision is in line with Supreme Court orders.

The committee deferred a briefing on what it termed a dubious financial deal of Rs700 million in awarding contract for in-flight entertainmen to an ineligible firm after the PIA failed to provide documents of the agreement.

Liniency my foot. They should ask them to repay all the past salaries as well as pay fine or face jail time.
