PIA 777 Go Around Video - interesting comments too!

Post by mhansari »

Check out the comments on this video... specially love these:

k34gk: That is the only average landing I have ever seen from a PIA pilot. They are 99% brilliant - pitching up about 5-8 secs before touchdown - no one but Pakistanis can do that and thats why we love em.

seamus2k8: It's a good landing in poor conditions. PIA is widely regarded to have some of the best pilots in the world, and from what I have seen of them I would agree.

Hi, Salaam.

Good video, and generally PK flight crew are good aviators, generally to the past experience they bring with them, like ex-PAF. They fly more hands on then normal. As for pitching before touchdawn, well sorry thats normal procedure for alll aircraft landing, not just PK. Its called the 'flare' im sure you can google it to find out exactly why its done.

But , yes PK tech crew are cool. I agree.(the old school guys)

Pitch-up on landing is never 8 degrees nose-up.

Usually you are flying at 3 degrees nose-up on approach (even is cruise these jets fly 1 degree nose-up) and you raise that to 5 degrees nose-up in the "flare" and hold it there.

There was nothing wrong with this landing. There was obviously a strong cross-wind which is why you see him weaving back-and-forth on the approach. As he touches down the aircraft does seem to swing. Notice how he corrects with the rudder.

Yes, PIA landings are famous for being feather-light.

It may surprise you that is NOT what pilots are told/taught to do. Trying to do that can extend your landing distance and ATC abroad generally want you down and off the active runway as quickly as possible because there are others behind you.

A good landing is actually a firm one where you "fly the plane onto the runway" by reducing the sink rate from about -700 fpm on approach to about -300 fpm as you cross the threshold (which is achieved by the 5 degree pitch-up manover mentioned above).

You let her settle.
