Population wise Multan is a bigger city than Sialkot and airport of Sialkot is now served by PIA widebody aircraft like Airbus A310-300 and Boeing 747-300 plus cargo flights by international operators.

In my opinion Multan Airport deserved this upgradation to allow widebody aircraft flights and I think this airport will see significant increase in international passenger and cargo traffic with widebody passenger and cargo aircraft operations in coming years.

There's also plan to establish cold cargo storage centre at Multan Airport for fruit/vegetable exporters from Multan and south Punjab.

Im with Abbas, Multan is a fast expanding city it has a large export not just mangoes. There are a number of different other products produced in the city and surrounding neighbourhoods. The city is known for its cultural heritage sites. The Mausoleum of Sheikh Baha-ud-Din Zakariya, as well as the Mausoleum of Shah Rukn-e-Alam, the Mausoleum of Shams-ud-Din, the Nuagaza tombs, the mosques, gurdwaras etc Many people from South Punjab travel great distances to travel abroad. The new airport will reduce the no. of hours passengers have to travel and allow more links to be created with South Punjab.

Cargo will expand as air trasport will become easier which hopefully will allow more cargo airlines to establish themselves in that region.

As for the design it does look quite outdated, still I guess anything is better than the one they have no. I hoped a glass and steel structure would have been more with today. Still the expansion is not too little nor too big I think four parking spaces will be plenty to handle the no. of passengers flights in and out of Multan.

According to June 21, 2010 newspaper reports, Phase-I of Multan Airport upgradation project i.e. runway extension work for widebody aircraft operations is nearing completion. The 7000ft length of this runway was readied to allow PIA to resume Boeing 737-300 service for Multan some months ago.

In June 19, 2010 PTV news report it was said that wide body aircraft flights to/from Multan are expected to start in October 2010.

So hopefully by the end of October 2010, Multan Airport will be ready for widebody aircraft flights including non-stop Hajj flights to Saudi Arabia.

newflyer wrote: Yes, population is bigger but we will also have to take into account the total air traffic. Perhaps this extension can do well for the fruit exporters but spending hundreds of millions is still not a wise decision. Sialkot is one-third of Multan but it has many expatriates and a strong industrial base; Multan does not have that many industries except for it being a major mango market and does not have that many expatriates as well.

As political opinion is not allowed on this website so I'll stay away from it but I will still say that it is happening because the PM is from that city. I do not need to say more.
I don't think decision to upgrade Multan Airport was made because it's homecity of current Prime Minister.

Apparently there had been genuine demand for upgradation and expansion of Multan airport to meet expected growth in passengers and air cargo.

Here's September 2005 APP news report and this topic was started with this news report. According to this news report then Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf had asked relevant authorities to plan Multan Airport expansion/upgradation.
Multan Airport Runway Repair To Cost Rs 720m

MULTAN, Sept 12 (APP)
Multan Airport runway is being repaired at a cost of Rs 720 million, said airport manager Syed Aamir Mahboob Gillani here Monday.

Talking to APP he said the work started about a month and half ago is likely to be completed in about two weeks' time. The work includes necessary rehabilitation like re-carpeting for smooth operation of flights.

Responding to a question about the airport expansion project costing Rs 1.7 billion, he said a three-member board has been constituted on the directive of President Musharraf to sort out the issue, which will comprise one member each from the Civil Aviation Authority, Ministry of Defence and Corps Headquarters Multan.

He said the board is likely to meet within a month to discuss the airport expansion project.

It is pertinent to mention that the President had announced to expand the existing Multan airport facility so that wide-bodied aircraft could land and take off for direct international passenger and cargo flights.

with all due respect, lack of knowledge is actually triggering these thoughts. Multan is one of the biggest local industry of cooking oil, pesticides, light engineering, agriculture based products and also second in textile. Also alot of expats travel in and out via Lahore because of lack of international and wide body air-crafts. A lot of labor actually travels out of Multan. If any airport deserved upgrade, it was Multan

Today (August 29) Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal and his wife arrived at Multan International Airport on a Boeing 747 in livery of Kingdom Holding Company - www.kingdom.com.sa - to deliver relief goods and monetary donation for flood affected people of Pakistan.

Most probably it was Boeing 747-4J6 (registration HZ-WBT7) as it's the only Boeing 747 aircraft in Kingdom Holding Company fleet at the moment. Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal is Chairman of Kingdom Holding Company.

The arrival of Kingdom Holding Company Boeing 747 indicates Multan International Airport runway is now ready to accept flights by widebody aircraft like Boeing 747.
