Why are such statements being made when no slots at NRT are available. If there were EK and QR would have bidded big money for them.

I remember the old 1990s PIA B 747 route KHI-BKK-MNL-NRT lol...B 742s twice a week.
Most probably, PIA have a pair of four slots (arrival and departure, each) at NRT. They are only using two pairs for the ISB-PEK-NRT flights. The other two used to be used for KHI-SE Asia-NRT,t this service was later discontinued.

I suspect PIA never relinquished those slots and know wants to restart this service, this time via BKK.

Hi ord
I must admit I agree with behramjee on this one, with respect to the advantages of fleet commonality, and negotiaing a bigger discount for a bulk purchase from one manufacturer.Behramjee, do you see any place for PIA to convert 2 or 3 of it's 747-300s to F configuration?
Regards to all, Mike.

either kirmani has lost his mind or hes having problems understanding numbers. 29 aircraft in a 5 year spell, what is this, the pia imf integration programme. its not only financially ridiculous but impossible given the current state of affairs. the 737s have been approved for their checks and will be flying till 2011 hence no aircraft replacing them will be seen until then. the 310s that were leased last year were for a 10 year period, meaning all 12 will have to be operational up till 2015 since pias self owned are newer then the ones just inducted life wise, making it preposterous to ground their own fleet before such time. as for the 747s, they re indespensible for pia and i would not wanna see the relatively younger 743s be converted to freighters ,instead they should opt for 742 or 743fs which are available at compelling prices and hours varying between 40000-50000 which in terms of a cargo aircraft is not even half its useful life. if they really have to convert their own 743s in to dedicated freighters then the oldest 1986 pieces should be used since the younger ones are more comfortable and crucial to pias most remunerative passneger profile on the busy sectors. they too can be used for as long, saudia ,jal ,even CX and emirates use 742 freighers which in that configuration carry on longer.

They use 744F. Its a freighter so the upper deck is not like what you see on the passenger version.

Some of these B787 should be the -300 version. This a perfect replacement for A300

None of the mainstream airlines are buying the ancient B742 Freighter. Emirates Sky Cargo B742 is operated by Atlas air, MAS and Lufthansa by Air Atlanta. Cathay and SIA are converting their B744 to freighters.

And most of those airlines that operate 742F's those a/c are not of the 1970's vintage. Like I said before AF has a 742F (F-GCBM if I'm not mistaken) which was manufactured in 1990.

If this is what PIA has planned they have my full blessing but lets not just assume that this is what they'll get or should get. You expect one thing and quite the opposite occurs. The possibilities are endless.

I for one would like to see them add A330-200/300's to the fleet, replace the 733's with either 8 to 10 A320's or 737-700's. The ATR's should be a mixed fleet of 42 and 72. The 74M's replaced with 3 to 4 744 combi's and maybe 1 or 2 more 77LR's and 773ER's and a few A310F's. I think talking right now about the 787 and A350 or even the A380 is a bit premature. They probably have A330's and 777's on their minds right now.

And lets for once get over this 3 man cockpit obsession. They should buy more 742's and 743's......... oh please. Look forward, not towards the past.

As far as I know Lufthansa has replaced their 747F fleet with
MD-11F. I think MD-11 would be the best option, but it is hard to get any used MD-11F

thats cus they already have them in service
naturally pia shouldnt pick up 70s vintage 747s with high hours and cycles. they re plenty of low utilized 742s made in the 80s that have used up just 40k hours which is just about the same you ll get on a second hand 744 made in the early 90s with a price tag thrice as much not to forget the added training expense. when planning the cargo fleet that too for an airline like pia a complete minimalist approach must be taken with extra care and provision for space and long term durability. airlines like jal and even malaysian dont use 742 freigheters for no reason at all although they have a lot more funds comming in to justify new 744s. if i pia can find 744 at the same rate then it might just make sense otherwise its another waste of resources.

The Cathay, AirFrance, KLM 742's were built in late 80's and are far more younger in age/cycles then anything PIA has. Cathay has converted all of its 742 into freighters. Air France and KLM utilize their 742 for seasonal roles like the canary islands. With recent more new orders by KLM and Air France, my speculatation is new jets will replace them 742's as well.

Emirates Sky Cargo 747 is 747-400F, emirates never had a 747-200 series aircraft in its fleet for any role.

The mainstream airlines you mentioned never bought any 742 freighters straight from manufacturers but converted Passeger version into freighters.

When PIA was shopping for 747 in mid 1980, no used 747 was available at prices PIA wanted.

Jal has a crap load of freighters in its fleet(i don't why you are saying this up their) major reason being Japanese manufacturers rely of air Cargo to deliver time sensitiive products to US market.

wrong...EK had 2 B 742Fs which did DXB-Gothenburg-JFK freighter flights twice a week + DXB-AMS twice a week + DXB-LHE-DAC-TPE once a week + DXB-HKG twice a week + DXB-BOM twice a week.

The Skycargo B 742Fs were in EKs fleet for around 4 years.

I think you guys are talking about this aircraft of Emirates Airlines SkyCargo:

As stated by Adnan, actually it is a Boeing 747-400 freighter without extended upper deck. Boeing manufactures 747-400 freighter without extended upper deck because it's not required in cargo version of 747-400.

Here are some more examples of Boeing 747-400 freighter without extended upper deck:

Oh yes, I have found this one from 747 production list:

Boeing 747-230B(SF) - Atlas Air (registration N507MC)
Operated by Atlas Air for Emirates between 1995 and 1996 in Atlas Air livery.
