PIA plans to retire over 1,000 employees

Post by Abbas Ali »

KARACHI: The management of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has issued admin order on Thursday for the pre-retirement of the staff belonging to the pay group of 3 to 5 reaching at the age of 57 years. More than 700 employees of PIA and around 300 employees of the PIA Precision Engineering will be affected from this decision. All those who are going to retire will get the salaries of three years in lump sum, management said. The issuance of the admin order regarding the forced retirement of the employees spread panic among the employees. There were also news that the management is also preparing second list of the staff belonging to the pay group of 6 to 9. The spokesperson of the PIA termed it as the part of the restructuring plan of the new management. However, she does not comment on the impact of this step.

They should add another 0 to that figure. But at least its a start. I can visualise all these disgruntled employees now filing petitions in the High Court for unfair dismissal. They feel they're entitled to stay on till they die on the job.

Before they go on firing rank and file....they should try unloading the numerous GMs, Directors and Executives who are eating into PIA's coffers with their huge salaries and perks....Another place would be to layoff all the jialays there were hired under BB and Nawaz....

Opposition terms action unjustified, to raise issue in Senate

Compulsory retirement of 850 PIA employees

KARACHI: Terming the compulsorily retirement of 850 PIA employees an anti-worker act and a part of the "Ramazan Package of the prime minister", the Leader of Opposition in the Senate, Raza Rabbani, has declared that this injustice would be taken up at the requisitioned session of the Senate to be held on October 7.

The PPP leader also criticised the PML-led government for this anti-labour act and said that it had once again proved that the present regime was big business-friendly and anti- labour. He also asked the PIA management to stop its anti-labour polices immediately and withdraw these discriminatory orders.

Raza Rabbani said that the step of the PIA management was a despicable act and pointed out that the PIA had an army of directors, general managers, and retired army officers in the top management who were drawing handsome salaries, allowances, and other perks running into millions of rupees but the axe has fallen on the low grade employees.

He said this was in keeping with the policy of the PML (Q). It may be recalled here that in earlier cases of retrenchment in other organizations, the low-grade employees were removed from service while on the recommendation of the international donors consultants were hired on huge retainers.

Raza said that government was presiding over the biggest retrenchment in the history of Pakistan. The PIA management has a lot to account for to the people of Pakistan in terms of sales and purchases of aircraft, foreign trips of the top management, huge amounts being spent on the renovation of offices, and purchase of cars for the management.

Terming the act as a tip of the iceberg, he foresaw further retrenchment by the present anti-labour management which has already privatised a number of the departments of the corporations to the detriment to their financial interests.

He said the PIA management was taking advantage of the fact trade union activity in the corporation had been banned under an administrative order. The PIA, he said, was violating the fundamental rights conferred under the Constitution, the law, the conventions and observations of the ILO.

Thanks God, I have been waiting for this news for some time now. If they could cut some more maybe by adding another zero as Moin said (lol) but they have to start getting rid of all those GMs and Senior sales people like Che said. Then will they start to see an increase in revenue and possibly profits.

PIA retrenchment issue referred to Senate body

ISLAMABAD:
The Senate on Friday referred the retrenchment matter of 850 workers of Pakistan International Airlines to its committee for defence.

Opposition leader in the Senate Raza Rabbani on point of order expressed his concern over the forced retirement of 850 low-grade workers by PIA administration. Criticising the retrenchment, he said, this is unfair and instead of providing employment opportunities to the people, the government is sending low-grade workers on forced retirement.

He asked the chairman to refer this issue to the committee for defence of the House for review, which the chairman referred.
