Birds Activity During Monsoon Around Lahore Airport - NOTAM Issued

In view of Monsoon Season, heavy bird activity around Lahore Airport below 3000 feet is observed. Pilots are advised to exercise extreme caution while approach and takeoff phase.

Today, Aviation Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique chaired a meeting at Lahore Airport to discuss and resolve the issue of birds disturbing flight operations at the airport.



* Insecticides to be sprayed on Lahore Airport airside to eradicate insects/worms that attract birds in Monsoon Season.

* Solid waste management companies around Lahore Airport directed to remove garbage that attracts birds.

* Marriage halls around Lahore Airport to be advised to dispose off garbage properly.

* Print/electronic/social media campaign to be launched for general public awareness about bird strike hazard to flight safety.

* Installation of modern system to control bird activity at Lahore Airport.

* Airlines maybe asked to revise flights schedule to avoid heavy bird activity in early morning hours during Monsoon Season.

On June 19:

* Oman Air Boeing 737 flight WY341 from Muscat and PIA Boeing 777 flight PK248 from Dammam burned jet fuel worth millions of rupees by flying holding pattern in the air due to presence of birds around Lahore Airport runway.

* Departure of Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 flight TK715 to Istanbul was also delayed due to presence of birds around Lahore Airport Runway.

On June 19, Oman Air Boeing 737-800 aircraft registration A4O-BAB flight WY341 from Muscat began flying holding pattern around 6:21 AM before making first attempt to land at Lahore Airport. At 6:30 AM, the aircraft discontinued landing approach to Lahore Airport Runway 36L from an altitude of 1,475 feet and reentered the holding pattern. It landed on Lahore Airport Runway 36L at 7:41 AM.

PIA Boeing 777-200ER aircraft registration AP-BHX flight PK248 from Dammam began flying holding pattern around 6:36 AM before making first attempt to land at Lahore Airport. At 7:10 AM, the aircraft discontinued landing approach to Lahore Airport Runway 18R from an altitude of 1,200 feet and reentered the holding pattern. It landed on Lahore Airport Runway 36L at 7:37 AM.

Departure of Turkish Airlines Airbus A330-300 aircraft registration TC-JNK flight TK715 to Istanbul was also delayed due to presence of birds around Lahore Airport runway. The began taxiing towards runway around 7:07 AM before returning to parking near passenger terminal building at 7:23 AM. The aircraft departed from Lahore Airport Runway 18R at 7:59 AM.

Firecrackers.


Pesticides spray.


Birdshooters.

According to news reports, bird hit evidence (bird feathers) without aircraft damage was found during post-flight inspection of PIA Boeing 777-200ER registration AP-BHX that arrived in Lahore at 9:05 AM as flight PK860 from Jeddah today.

Later, the aircraft was cleared to perform flight PK247 to Dammam that left Lahore at 11:26 AM. PK247 was scheduled to depart from Lahore at 10:10 AM.
