Pakistan CAA Advises Aircraft Crew Not to Fast During Flights

Post by Abbas Ali »

PIA has advised its cockpit and cabin crew not to fast during flights. Ramadan, the month of fasting, is starting a few days later.

The airline in its safety bulletin/alert says:

"Although, while it is perceived that flying with fasting is a possibility, in such a case the element of risk is considerable and margin of safety minimal. In an emergency with multiple complexities, wrong and delayed actions may result in serious consequences due to impaired judgment and incapacitation."

"While fasting, one has to go for a change in normal routine. Therefore, fasting and flying may not be confined to religious reasons as there are defined relaxations on fasting while travelling. Fasting is known to cause dehydration, slowing of reflexes, deterioration of judgment and lowering of stamina."

"After considering all facts objectively, it's clear that flying an aircraft while fasting is not only risking your own life but that of others too, in the aircraft and on the ground."

According to PIA Safety Bulletin issued on April 13, as advised by Chief of Aviation Medicine, Aero Medical Centre, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), "the air crew shall not exercise license privileges while fasting".

The airline's safety bulletin advises "aircraft crew including cockpit and cabin crew to consume at least a glass of water, juice or soft drink prior to operating flights.

This action is to be done while signing undertaking for psychoactive substance and breath analyzer test to for alcohol before operating their flight all over the holy month of Ramadan."
