This is sad news. I have had the pleasure of chatting with Fawad Butt in the early 2000s when I was one of the admins of PakistaniAviation.com. May both the departed soles rest in peace.

Two people were killed after an aircraft tasked with spraying pesticide for eliminating locusts crashed in Cholistan's Tillo Bangla area in Sadiqabad tehsil on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Shoaib Malik, the pilot, and aircraft engineer Fawad Butt, both of whom were officials of the Federal Plant Protection Department. Both died instantaneously as the plane crashed into the ground, according to the district administration.

Initial investigations suggest the plane crashed due to a technical fault, said the district administration, adding that the bodies were being shifted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan.

Rahim Yar Khan Deputy Commissioner Ali Shahzad said the two men had been tasked with spraying pesticide in Cholistan in order to eliminate locusts. He said that the aircraft had taken off from Sheikh Zayed International Airport on Sunday

Plane spraying pesticide crashes; two killed

Malik Irfanul Haq

January 13, 2020

SADIQABAD:
RAHIM YAR KHAN: A pilot and an aviation engineer lost their lives when their single-engine plane busy carrying out pesticide spray to eliminate locust crashed in Cholistan, some 65km from here, on Sunday morning.

The aircraft took off from the Sheikh Zayed International Airport at 9.30am and crashed after an hour near Chak 215-P in the Tillu Bangla area in Sadiqabad tehsil.

The deceased, captain pilot Shoaib Malik and aircraft engineer Fawad Khalid Butt, were employees of the Federal Plant Protection Department. They belonged to Lahore.

Rahim Yar Khan Deputy Commissioner Ali Shahzad told Dawn that both died instantaneously. He said initial investigations suggested a technical fault had caused the crash. He said the bodies had been shifted to the Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital.

He said the plane was spraying pesticides in the area on a request of the district administration to tackle another wave of locust attack. He said the aircraft had so far sprayed 1,000 acres of land in Cholistan since Jan 10.

Shehzad said a team of the plant protection department would ascertain the actual cause of the aircraft crash.

Sq leader Shoaib Malik & Engineer Fawad Butt together. Probably it's same ill-fate aircraft in background.

Very unfortunate and sad incident. Thoughts and prayers for victims and their families.
On a side note, for an aircraft, age alone does not determine its safety and if maintained as per manufacturer's and regulatory requirements, it is afe to fly, yet does it make operational sense to keep flying an aircraft build 60 year ago. Its maintainability, logistics support and outdated technology must be a nightmare for people flying/maintaining it for serious flying.

Pakistan CAA issues aircraft's Airworthiness Certificate and air crash investigators will certainly check maintenance record of this aircraft.

There was a unconfirmed report that aircraft clipped its wing with a sand dune while flying very low during a spray pass.

Quite probable; since one of the pictures of the wreckage shows a wing lying at a distance from the aircraft. Normally, wings don't separate from the body in a crash.
