Quetta Airport has two parallel runways i.e. 12,000 feet long Runway 13/31 and 12,000 feet long Runway 13R/31L which is used for military aircraft only.

The advertisement is apparently for Runway 13/31. Probably reconstruction work will include runway extension.

I hope they also install Instrument Landing System (ILS) for this runway after completion of its extension/reconstruction work.

Most likely this runway reconstruction work is the reason why PIA Boeing 777 aircraft will not operate Hajj flights from Quetta this year. I quess during reconstruction work the entire 12,000 feet length of runway will not be available for bigger widebody aircraft types like Boeing 777.

On June 7, 2011, PIA gave a tender notice (>>see details here<<) for wet leasing an aircraft from a selected list of widebody aircraft types (Airbus A300-600, Airbus A330, Boeing 767-300 and Lockheed L-1011 TriStar). Most likely the wet leased aircraft will operate Hajj flights from Quetta during this runway reconstruction/extension work.

Re: CAA to Rehabilitate and Upgrade Quetta Airport Runway 13

Post by Abbas Ali »

The airfield at Quetta has two runways i.e. Runway 13R/31L and Runway 13L/31R.

Apparently, Runway 13R/31L is used by military aircraft visiting Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Base Samungli and civilian/commercial aircraft visiting Quetta International Airport use Runway 13L/31R.

The CAA advertisement does not clarify which runway is going to be rehabilitated and upgraded.

Probably Runway 13L/31R used by civilian/commercial aircraft will be rehabilitated and upgraded?

13R/31L is basically a parallel taxi link which can be used as an emergency rwy for fighter and other small acft.
Interestingly an 80 Dubai airport days rwy rehabilitation project has just finished right on time. The northern rwy 30R/12L was completely dug up, re laid from bottom up just in fifty days.

Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan layed the foundation for reconstruction of main runway. Reconstruction of runway was long overdue. Because of the dilapidated condition of runway, wide body aircraft could not land at Quetta, effecting its connectivity to other parts of world. Federal Minister therefore directed CAA to immediately plan and undertake the project.

Today with grace of Almighty we have laid the foundation for development of runway which Phase 3 of the project to upgrade Quetta International Airport. Phase 1 and Phase 2 included upgrading/expansion of Quetta Airport terminal building.

After the runway is completed, flight operations with large aircrafts Boeing 777 will be possible. Ghulam Sarwar Khan said that Quetta will have direct flights for hajj and other countries of the world.

Federal Minister said that we shall make all efforts to complete phase-3 by October 2021.The project will also boost the economic conditions through job creation, skill development and running of industry.

Seems reconstructed/extended runway to enable regular Boeing 777 flight operations in airport's hot & high conditions requiring longer takeoff run.
