Saudi Arabian Airlines Embraer ERJ-170LR in Retro Livery

Post by Abbas Ali »

To celebrate its 65th anniversary, Saudi Arabian Airlines has applied a 1950s retro scheme to this Embraer ERJ-170-100LR (registration HZ-AEG).

Photo taken at King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), Jeddah, on March 13, 2011.

Hope they apply this livery on some of their long-haul aircraft also so that spotters around the world also manage to see/photograph it.

I wish Saudia had chosen a more interesting retro livery- like the two toned one with the black nose:

Though to answer my own statement (aap jana, aap hi hairaan hona :) ), I think the chosen livery was the very first colorscheme for Saudia.

This sure is SV's very first livery applied to that ERJ-170, it would have looked stunning and more eye catching if polished aluminum was done instead of that ugly gray on lower half of the fuselage, wings and nacelles...... YUKH! :expression_less: :expression_less:

As is these SV's CV-340 pics:

Firstly, I think material used in making fuselage of most of modern airliners does not allow them to appear in bare metal finish.

Secondly, I seems that there's no proper paint available to give the look of real shiny bare metal look on airliners.

I see airlines using grey paint where they attempt to show bare metal area on an aircraft painted in retro livery like in following examples:

Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-800

Aer Lingus Airbus A320-200

Grey paint chosen by KLM and Lufthansa in following photos appears to be shiny but obviously it also cannot exactly match the shine & look of polished metal.

Interesting to see Boeings being painted gray or aluminum when it comes to these retro colors!. Look at American airlines B738s, they are overall in bare metal polished livery!. Yes you can't polish newer Airbuses as there fuselages have a lot of composites in them but that is not the case with Boeing products. Now keep B787 out of this discussion as it's totally different Boeing airplane altogether.

Maybe it's that Embraers also use lots of composite materials on there airplanes, hence why Saudi Erj is painted gray Vs polished bare metal.

Abbas actually if you look at American's A300s from 80's you will see them all painted in light gray overall but in 90s AA sorted this out with special metal paint that they later on painted on there A300's which turned whole fuselages in polished bare metal scheme.

AA A300 in 1989 in overall gray scheme

AA A300 in 1999 in Polished bare metal scheme

AA B738s in polished bare metal scheme...

Yes certain parts like fin where a lot of composites have been used on B738s are painted in gray but rest of the fuselage is finished in polished aluminum scheme. Every time paint is applied on the any part of the aircraft, it adds more weight to the aircraft's surface, this make it heavier and it uses more fuel!....

Thats a technical point raised . I like that..
Bare metal Finish is some how almost achievable even now but the grounding time involved in it and use of more composites i.e wing to body fairings are a hurdle.
by the way, just for information .. its still done on nose cowls when ever schedule allows us.

I was about to say the same thing until I saw your post Abdul Aziz... What made me think is the aircraft's rare part where paint is not applied in proper proportion.

Thank you AbdulAziz for informative input.

The source of this photo and information about it is www.skyliner-aviation.de which is a respected aviation website with its own unique and exclusive real-life aviation photos contributed by people from around the world.

Now it seems in the case of this Saudi ERJ-170LR someone tricked http://www.skyliner-aviation.de by submitting a photoshopped/modified photo.

That is due to use of different metals then the Aluminum, Embraer must have used Titanium around APU due to extremely high exhaust temperatures. Other then that, i can't see a reason why those stations are not painted on all 170s and 195s currently flying around, even Air Canada's planes are bare metal at those stations.

Yes, it's a technical reason and a fact that many people have no clue about but it's also a fact that composites are taking over as time goes by, i sure can't ever see airplanes size of B773W and B747s to be fully built by composites!.....
