DOHA: Shaheen Air International (SAI) yesterday joined Pakistan International Airlines and Aero Asia in offering free carriage of relief material to hubs near earthquake-hit areas in Pakistan.
The Pakistan embassy in Doha will issue letters to individuals and organisations sending medicines and first aid kits to ensure waiver of Customs duties and speedier clearance at destinations in Pakistan.
At a community meeting held yesterday, Zaman Khan, an official at Cleopatra Travels, the General Sales Agents in Qatar for SAI, announced his airline would fly all relief material donated by individuals and organizations in Qatar free of cost. Those who wanted to send such aid could hand it over to SAI, he added.
Ishtiak Bangash, a community leader who also runs a freight company in Doha, has offered free coordination in airlifting of all relief material sent from Doha.
Akhtar Anwar Siddiqi, Community Welfare Attache at the Pakistan embassy, said individuals carrying medicines and medical equipment to the country for relief work could request letters from the diplomatic mission. These letters, addressed to Pakistani Customs, would ensure speedier clearance of these supplies and would be exempt from Customs duties.
Jamal Faik, Country Manager, Aero Asia, announced any Pakistani expatriate whose family back home was severely affected by the quake could fly on the carrier free of cost. The airline, which operates twice weekly flights to Lahore and Peshawar, has also offered free carriage of relief material from Doha.
