PIA chief inaugurates corporate marketing moot

Post by Abbas Ali »

KARACHI, Oct 5 (APP)- Chairman and CEO PIA, Tariq Kirmani inaugurated a two day corporate marketing conference here at a hotel.

According to a PIA press release all senior Vice Presidents of PIA and all the General Managers and Managers from global PIA network were present on the occasion.

Speaking impromptu, Tariq Kirmani briefly talked about the glorious past of PIA and how after a period of time complacency set in and PIA started going downhill.

He said he would like to focus on the future of PIA and in order to set PIA in that direction it has become extremely important to go through the process of internal and external scanning.

He said while competition is growing, PIA was slipping away from competition. "When you slip away from competition you slip away from business, and ultimately it dies", he cautioned and maintained that status quo is a sure recipe for death for there is nothing constant.

"You are either going up or you are going down. And when you struggle to achieve greater heights you go up, when you do nothing, you go down. In other words, sitting in your office from 8.30 am to even as late as 1-30 pm, means nothing if you have done nothing and if you have not created any value for the Corporation. You have to be proactive and creative to do business successfully".

"Our business is flying planes and to ensure that these planes are well maintained and flying safely. Then we need passengers for them to make our business successful, he added.

The Chairman talked at length about the three C's concept of Convenience, Comfort and Competitiveness - all provided with a smile.

He said Convenience stood for flying planes with the passenger's convenience with respect to timing, ticketing, method of access and availability etc.

Comfort stood for handling, seats, IFE, ambience of the interior, good food, great experience.

Competitiveness was concerned with improving yield, seat factor, capacity, fleet age and ticket pricing.

He said PIA airplanes have an average fleet age of 20 years, compared to Singapore Airlines which has an average fleet age of 7 years.

Actions speak louder than words. I would like to see some action not just empty and hollow promises.

Kirmani exhorts bold decisions for revenue generation

KARACHI:
Chairman Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Tariq Kirmani on Thursday stressed upon the PIA marketing staff to struggle for achieving greater heights. He was addressing a two-day global marketing conference organized by the PIA.

The conference was attended by all of the senior vice presidents of PIA and general managers and managers from all over the world. "This is a critical juncture in the life of PIA," he said. Four business units have been created in marketing. One general manager will be responsible for each unit including passenger sales, cargo sales, group tours and charters and other business.

These four general managers will run the entire PIA business and will be held responsible. The bottom line is revenue expansion. "Have the guts to take decisions," he exhorted and as an example, he cited the decision to reduce fares by 30 per cent, which was widely criticized but the result was a 17 per cent increase in revenue.

"Aggressive marketing is the need of the day. We want revenue enhancements and expansion and the targets from now on will be in double digits, to offset the rise in fuel prices, which we can do nothing about. These prices are here to stay," the PIA skipper said.

He encouraged the participants to take bold, honest decisions in the best interest of PIA and he assured them that they will not be penalized for it. Only decision taken which are not in line with ethics and are not honest will be penalized, he said. PIA has great potential and he said he was confident that together we can make all this happen.

He said that he is not a person who dwells in the past and would like to concentrate on the future of PIA and where it has to go from here. In order to set PIA in the right direction, it has become extremely important to go through the process of what is known in management language as internal and external scanning, to see where it is now, he said.

While competition was growing PIA was slipping away from competition and added, "When you slip away from competition, you slip away from business and ultimately it dies". "Status quo is a sure recipe for death," he maintained.

"Our business is flying planes, putting people in the plane and making sure that the airplanes are full and flying," Kirmani said. "We don't make planes, so we can forget about that, our concern is merely to get passengers to fill these planes and to ensure that these planes are well maintained and flying safely," he said. The chairman talked in length about the three Cs concept of Convenience, Comfort and Competitiveness all provided with a smile.
