Sialkot Intl. Airport to be operational by December

KARACHI (August 24 2005):
The country's first private sector financed airport will start functioning at Sialkot with handling of cargo consignments from December and also start passenger operations by the first quarter of 2006.

According to chief executive of the Sialkot airport project Khawar A. Khwaja, various installations and work on runway and buildings would be completed by November and first cargo flights could be handled from December followed by regular passenger services in the first quarter of next year.

Persons contributing Rs 5 million for the project have been made directors in the company handling the airport project. Some 200 persons have already paid Rs 5 million each.

The total cost of the project is Rs 2 billion and this is being contributed by the private sector. Organisers of the Sialkot airport project hope all national and international airlines would use the airport once it begins functioning.
