Keep in mind its not confirmed, its just another one of many speculations as of yet. InshaAllah the investigation being undertaken will reveal the cause for this unfortunate incident.

Why KHI ATC staff not watch proof witness engines touch / hit runway but passenger reported two engines touched / hit runway abort landing and come back to land too late. Hope all crew pilots to learn experience from them. also I wish Captain Sajjid Gul should try to land 25R instead of 25L avoid hit house.

Its a bit hard to digest that during first landing attempt, the aircraft made belly landing on engines and that too the pilots initiated a go-around. Has anyone heard pilot communicating landing gear problems to ATC?

Received the following from a retired PIA pilot

The info that I have received:
Landing Gears failed - as per procedure came for Low Go on 1st approach.
During go around multiple birds hits when reaching end of R/W.
Turned left to climb and come for another approach, by this time both engines suffered partial power loss.
Was unable to maintain altitude due to less power.
Eventually lost both engines, gave MAYDAY call, turned towards R/W , tried to glide towards it.
Couldn't make it due to very low altitude, stalled and fell on residential area.

Landing gear problem and engine power loss can hardly be linked to each other. Crash seems not to have occurred because of landing gear problem but rather due to dual engine power loss. For both engines to suffer simultaneous power loss it has to be quite a big flock of birds rather than a single bird strike which has happened in Karachi many a times before. Scrapping of engines seems more likely from the aircraft picture and the aircraft altitude data which shows that the go around was performed at 275 feet. One of the surviving passenger has also confirmed touching of aircraft to ground then lifting up again in the air. The scrapping of engines must have caused damage to them resulting in their power loss because before that the only problem that the pilot reported was regarding landing gear and no mention was made regarding any engine trouble. Performing a go around after impacting ground is very dangerous and can be catastrophic. Also I have heard that scrapping marks have also been identified on runway 25L.

From the perspective of a non technical person: why would the pilots not bring the aircraft down once they had touched or scraped the ground? Did they not know that the aircraft was experiencing problems and lifting it back up in the air and then bringing it down (go around/TOGA) again could lead to a crash?

Hey everyone,

Maybe high stress situation caused pilots to lose anticipation of touch and go without landing gear? Fatigue could be a factor? Also, pilot was heard saying "gee sir" while contacting ATC which is against protocol I believe? Another implication towards stress/fatigue.

No, you cannot derive conclusions from “jee sir”. If you regularly listen to atc recordings then you’d know a slight use of urdu during communication is a regular feature. There are many instances during foggy weather when pilots ask the controller at long/short finals to “lights ki intensity barha den” when it’s hard to spot the runway. It doesn’t make them any less professional or that they’re going against the protocol. They might have been to busy handling the emergency but saying that this meant they’re stressed or fatigued is a miserable derivation.

This doesnt support what we have so far, if he was conducting a 'low go' during first approach, why did ATC clear him to land? I assume by first approach you mean the one right before the crash occured??

If the engines scrapped the runway then a forensic investigation of the runway surface would show the evidence.
Surprised that the engines had very similar black marks. If it touched the runway would the damage / dents not be more severe? I wonder if the engines are in a state (after scrapping tops of houses and crashing into them)to highlight such an incident earlier in this event.

Are there cameras in the ATC tower watching the activity on the runway, or security camera around the airport perimeter?

Also, as mentioned above, the ATC would be observing this and communicating it to the cockpit.

Compensation of PKR 1,000,000 instead of PKR 500,000 to be given to relatives of crash victims.
