Expat and son bypassed screening after paying bribe

Waseem Ashraf Butt March 21, 2020

GUJRAT:
The consistent arrival of overseas Pakistanis in the neighbouring Gujrat, Jhelum and Mandi Bahauddin districts is becoming a cause for concern for the local health authorities as well as the district administrations owing to the fear of them being suspected coronavirus patients.

Four confirmed cases of coronavirus were reported in Gujrat and Jhelum districts and all four were overseas Pakistanis who had arrived from Spain and the UK.

The three positive cases in Gujrat district included the first in the district -- a man -- and his 20-year-old son as well as another man, who all had returned from Spain. The first positive case kept meeting relatives and friends due to which the authorities faced the daunting task of locating the people he had met since he returned more than a week ago.

His contacts were found in Shadiwal and Dinga towns and Lundpur village of the district, Gujjar Khan city of Rawalpindi and Gakhar Mandi of Gujranwala. In the last three days, 32 of his contacts were quarantined and his son also later found infected with the virus.

On Friday, the local authorities cordoned off at least six houses in Gumti village of Dinga to quarantine the contacts of the first positive case, while his family members had already been quarantined.

Official sources said that the man had bypassed screening at the Islamabad airport by paying Rs6,000 as bribe. His relative who received him at the airport told authorities that he was suffering from high fever when he landed in Islamabad.

In Jhelum, a 75-year-old expatriate returning from the UK tested positive for coronavirus. Initially, the health authorities did not trust the man when he reported himself due to which he got his tests conducted from a national laboratory that confirmed him as positive. The authorities then shifted the man to an isolation ward and his contacts have been quarantined.

At least 1,500 expatriates from Gujrat, Jhelum and Mandi Bahauddin districts arrived in Pakistan in the last one week. Mandi Bahauddin tops the list with around 900 people coming from Spain, Italy and France and around 300 in Gujrat as per the official figures of the interior ministry.

The sources added that the overseas arrivals were increasing by the day and the authorities were finding it difficult to locate many of those that did not cooperate due to the fear of being quarantined.

A senior administrative officer told Dawn that an area near Gujrat might be locked down in case of an increase in the number of around 20 suspected cases for which arrangements were already made.

All that spraying is useless, as viruses cannot survive for very long outside a host body anyway; not to mention that floors and road surfaces don't exactly constitute a major contamination risk in the first place. The funds wasted on this charade could have been put to good use elsewhere.

Can you please point out which academic or health body calls disinfection of floors and roads as a waste of money. This is a practice being done in so many countries of the world. Bear in mind, this is a virus that is still evolving and till date no one can exactly pinpoint all its modes of transmission.

This practice is common only in countries where politicians/rulers are desperate to remain in control by pretending to 'fight the virus', typically because they are well aware their nations' health care system is utterly inadequate. Those people don't care about the effectiveness of the show they put on, as long as it's highly visible and the (typically uneducated) masses believe their propaganda.

Covid-19 is a more deadly but otherwise fairly standard coronavirus, a well-known family of viruses that are the cause of -among other things- the common cold; modes of transmission for those are standard knowledge.

Eight more thermal scanners installed at IIA

April 14, 2020

RAWALPINDI:
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has installed eight more thermal scanners at different points inside Islamabad International Airport (IIA) to detect fever or flu in passengers coming from abroad, in an attempt to prevent further spread of coronavirus (Covid-19).

According to sources, more passengers will be scanned in less time compared to the previous practice.

A senior aviation official said that the new scanners have been installed to facilitate more and more passengers in less time and strengthen the scanning process.

It will help to detect affected people coming from abroad, he added.

The new scanners have been installed at international, domestic departure and arrival lounges to ensure scanning of every passenger and crew member.

According to the standard operating procedure, any passenger detected with symptoms of fever or flu is to be shifted to hospital right from the airport.

Since the outbreak of coronavirus in China, many airports have been taking strict measures to scanning passengers along with crew members to prevent spread of the deadly virus.

Health authorities jointly with airport authorities have been checking the temperature of every passenger before boarding the plane and disembarking.
