KARACHI

Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) has asked the Civil Aviation Authority to take steps to protect the exports cargo from the damaging impacts of continuing monsoon rains at Karachi Airport. In a letter to Secretary Aviation and Director General CAA, Shahrukh Nusrat, Central Chairman PHMA, Muhammad Javed Bilwani said that the officials at Air Cargo Terminal of the Karachi Airport have not taken any steps to make the exports consignments secure from the rains.

A copy of the letter was also provided to Business Recorder on Friday said that members of the PHMA have complained about the mishandling of their export consignments and damaged from the monsoon rains at the cargo terminal. "You are requested to kindly take serious notice and direct the concerned to take all necessary steps, safety and security measures to prevent damage and loss of export goods being transported through air cargo from Karachi Airport and other airports in Pakistan," according to the letter.

Scarcity of handling facilities at airports for export of fruits & vegetables is highly concerning since the export consignments are kept in an open area, said Waheed Ahmed, leading exporter and former chairman All Pakistan Fruit & Vegetable Exporters, Importers & Merchants Association (PFVA) and added that the exporters have sustained huge financial losses during the current rainy season in Karachi due to inadequate cargo storage facilities.
